QUESTION: What are key issues that need addressed in the 1st district office in Sedgwick County?
ANSWER: When elected to the Sedgwick County commission my desire is to work with other commissioners, the Sedgwick County staff, and other braches of government on these key issues. Recycle. Solid waste deposal-landfill (now out of state) is expensive and wasteful. We need to recycle using systems that work and are in place elsewhere in the United States, and Canada. Truck-side sorting and 70-75 of all wastes, solid and organic, can be and is done in California at the same cost as ours. We need to protect further our water supply and clean up the Arkansas River, reduce septic tanks over the underground water reservoirs. Manufacturing industries elsewhere are moving out of the country to take advantage of cheap labor (often slave labor). We need to be flexible and keep local industry profitable. I will vote to allow the public to vote on casino gambling. The income obtained from gambling will help people with fixed incomes reduce real estate taxes. Also adult and veteran education may be funded thus improving our skilled workforce. Homeless persons, often need help to rejoin society; look at ways to improve our assistance.
I believe our governmental facilities are underutilized –schools not used much at night or in the summer. Park facilities not used at night. Both could be used for neighborhood meetings and adult education, etc. Also, Sedgwick County operations are largely funded by from property taxes which unevenly tax the poor.
