Q-I am interested in trying to pallet garden. I have seen it in pictures and really love the rustic look and the idea of upcycling the pallet. Before I invest though, I want to know if it really works and is it worthwhile. Do you have any tips?

A-Whether you are short on space or just like the look or concept, pallet gardening is worth every effort. It is great for the environment, inexpensive, fun, and astonishingly beautiful. You did not mention whether you intended to plant a vegetable garden or use your pallets for plants and flowers, but you can do either. Or, if you love to cook, fresh herbs are also another great option. I am enthusiastic about pallet gardening because it is much easier to grow organically, control pests; they fit in nearly any space and are mobile, so you can easily provide protection from adverse weather. As for tips, I do have a few. First, start with a good pallet. Make sure the boards are secure, or nail them in. It helps to sandpaper the wood too, as your hands will be in and around the boards frequently. You will want to use good quality landscape fabric for the backing, well secured with plenty of staples. Some people add a layer of newspaper to the bottom before adding soil, but that is up to you. If you were organic gardening, I would do without the newspaper and avoid the inks and dyes used in newsprint. Use planting soil and you will avoid the problem of weeds. When planting, lay the pallet flat. If possible, keep it flat through several waterings so the soil has time to settle and compress before you lift it up. It will be fine after a day or two, but waiting a week is best in making sure the plants have time to take root and preventing soil loss. One last thing—I find it is always best to plant the plants tightly together. It looks great and helps in keeping everything in place. Enjoy your pallet garden!

Q-I am a beginning gardener and planted my first garden last season. Unfortunately, I spent about $300 and ended up planting in a spot that just did not work, killing off everything I planted. How do I know where to plant?

A-Gardeners save time, energy, and money by gathering information about the types of flowers that will grow best in their garden location. You can find flowers that will grow in just about any location, but every property has a location most suited for successful gardening. April 1st is generally considered the time to start planting cool weather annuals such as petunias and snapdragons as well as most perennials and frost proof vegetable plants. Part of gardening research includes finding the best location for your flower garden, then finding the flowers most suited to that location. Before buying plants or seeds, or turning over the first shovel of dirt do some investigation. Look at the quality of soil at all of the locations you are considering, as well as the amount of sun and shade. If you choose the best location of your property to grow flowers, then you will most likely never have to relocate your flower bed, or kill off your investment. Some things to consider when choosing the best location for your flower garden are: • Sunlight. The amount of sunlight your flowers require differs among species. If you are going to plant roses, then you need to choose a site that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. If you like ferns or Hostas, they require at least 50% shade to grow optimally. • Soil drainage. Knowing the soil drainage rate is crucial when planting a flower garden. Sandy soil will drain very fast. It will drain very slowly if your dirt is full of clay. The leading cause of death for flowering plants is poor soil drainage. When choosing a location for your flower garden, test the soil before planting and correct any issues. • Water location. If your water source is inconvenient, you will be less likely to stay on top of proper watering. Save time and energy by choosing a garden site close to a source of water, or else you will find yourself trucking water to the garden by bucket or sprinkler can. If you plan on growing a very large flower garden, you could invest in a water irrigation system. • Soil quality. Flowers grow best in slightly acidic soil, with a pH within the range of 6.5 to 7.2. Purchase a soil test kit from your garden center and follow the instructions to test your soil. If your findings determine that you need to adjust the pH levels of your soil, add lime to reduce alkaline or add sulfur to reduce acid. Retest your soil in two weeks and then adjust again, if necessary. Add compost to your soil regardless of the pH levels. Starting a flower garden can be fun and exciting. It can also be a source of frustration if you do not invest some time learning about your location and flower selections. Good luck, and happy gardening!

Q-During the holidays, I enjoyed having flowers in my home for all of the festivities. Now that the holidays are over, I am missing that added touch in my home. What would you suggest I try for something lasting that gives that same festive and special touch?

A-If you are like me, having flowers in the home every day would be first choice! Sometimes though, that is not practical or possible. In these instances, try opting for something a bit more lasting. One of the best ways to add that special feel that fresh flowers add to any room is to opt for flowering plants. With proper care, flowering plants last longer and add that element of warmth and cheer. There are many great options out there this time of year. Some of my personal favorites include potted primrose, hyacinth, and iris. You can also try a mini-potted garden in which you can create a beautiful focal point using a combination of flowering and non-flowering plants that you find attractive. If flowering is not a steadfast requirement, try adding plants that add interest as well as provide indoor air quality benefits. The Areca Palm, Lady Palm, Bamboo Palm, Rubber Plant, Dracaena, Dwarf Date Palm, Ficus Alii, Boston Fern, Peace Lily, and Philodendron are the top ten plants for removing formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide from the air.

Q-I want to dress-up my new place with plants.Do you have any recommendations for easy to grow plants that thrive under lower lighting conditions?

A-Nothing brightens up a home like a beautiful and thriving plant. While some people have a special knack keeping plants alive, others struggle. One of the ways to assure your success is to choose the right plants for your home lighting conditions, as well as your ability to care for them. You might be blessed with plenty of sunny south-facing windows, but if not, do not despair. There are plenty of beautiful plants that thrive in shady corners that have little natural light. Here a few choices you might want to consider: Snake Plant Also known as Mother-in-Law's Tongue, this plant looks very dramatic with long stiff leaves and variegation patterns in yellow or silver. The Snake Plant is a desert plant, so it needs very little care and only infrequent watering and periods of dryness between. Peace Lily While most low-light plants are only foliage, the Peace Lily offers a huge white flower along with the deep green leaves. The plant grows between 2 and 3 feet high, and prefers moist to damp soil that should not dry out between watering. One thing to keep in mind is that the leaves on the Peace Lily are somewhat toxic, so it may not be a good choice for a home with pets or children. Chinese Evergreen The beautiful Chinese Evergreen is popular because just about anyone can keep them alive. Although called an evergreen, it looks nothing like a pine or fir and has broad, often variegated, leaves. Devil's Ivy If you love climbing plants, try Devil's Ivy. They look lovely hanging or draped from a top shelf. The runners can get quite long and need trimming, the plant requires little care beside watering. Cast Iron Plant I am not sure why or how the plant came to be known as the Cast Iron Plant, but perhaps it is because of its fortitude. This plant is a great choice for beginners or for people who have an admittedly brown thumb. This sturdy plant needs only minimal light and grows to around 2 feet in height. Remember to choose the right plant for the intended space. Some plants can get quite large. If you have questions, talk to your local greenhouse about what plants will work well for your home.

Q-My New Year resolution is to keep fresh flowers in the home all year long. They make me happy, so I am going with it! I would love to keep them looking fresh as long as possible. Are there ways to do that?

A-There are a number of factors that affect the life of cut flowers such as when they were cut and at what stage. Other factors include how the stems were cut, the condition of the cut, and the condition of the water. First, let's address how to cut flowers. If you are getting flowers from a florist, the stems should already be cut properly when you get them. However, if you want to prolong their freshness and beauty or want to use flowers from your garden, it helps to know proper cutting procedures. It is best to cut flowers with a sharp, un-serrated knife. Always cut on a slant as it exposes more stem surface area. This is simple, but very important. Next, you will want to remove any leaves that would be submerged in the vase. This will help keep the water clean. The water, of course, is the next important factor. Cut flowers have a continuous need for water so keeping the water in top shape is the best way to prolong their beauty. Bacteria starts to grow within 3 hours and immediately starts to plug the straw-like stem structure, preventing proper water absorption. This will cause flowers to fade, wilt, and weaken. To keep the water in good condition, follow these steps: • Change the water every three days. Do not just top off the water. • Use the flower preservative packet. It contains a biocide (to kill bacteria), and acidifier, and sugar. Finally, you might be wondering about other water additives and if they really work. While the floral preservative provided by the florist works best as it was designed to do the job, there are other solutions that work in the same way with various degrees of success. Here are a few of the most common: • Add one part lemon-lime soda (not diet) to 3 parts water. Then to each quart of this solution, add 1/4 teaspoon bleach. Thereafter, add 1/4 teaspoon bleach after each 4 days of use. • To 1 quart water add 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon bleach. • Add 2 ounces Listerine mouthwash per gallon of water. Listerine contains sucrose (food) and a bactericide. Listerine is acidic and is said to help water move up the cut stem. Happy New Year!

Q- I have always wanted a cottage garden. I love how beautiful and effortless it looks. However, in years of trying I have found it is not effortless at all. I am wondering if our climate is even appropriate for one. Can you give me any tips on getting that serene and removed look?

A- Indeed, part of the beauty of a cottage garden is that it looks as if it burst forth from the environment naturally. Though it does take some planning and effort, the result is worth every moment spent. No matter the climate or personal gardening style, you can borrow elements to create the perfect cottage garden, but first you need a plan. Without one, it is easy to get lost in the process and end up with something you did not intend or do not find enjoyable. Talk to a landscape expert or consult some garden books on cottage design to help identify the vision you have for your garden. When you begin, remember that cottage gardens rely on layers to create the artful and romantic effect. Begin by creating the backdrop or canvas by adding the structural elements of your trees and shrubs. Think of your entire plan when you consider their placement. Cottage gardens rely on perennials, which hold their place in the garden year round and provide additional structure, texture, and visual interest. Think of their color throughout each season as well as their height and shape. Next, fill in the gaps with annuals. Pick plants for effect and think about the texture, height, each adds as well as the color. Remember to mix it up and add drama with colorful spires. Add climbers or billowers such as wisteria, phlox, breath of heaven, or lilac to add the softness and to give areas that enclosed and intimate feeling. Fill in the base of your design, add lacy accents with small, wispy flowers. Finally, soften up the edges of walkways with mossy borders. You are probably thinking that sounds like a lot of work, and you would be right. Your work, and about 18 months of patience will pay off with an incredible cottage garden.

Q- Decorating my home with anything floral is something that has sort of become a hobby of mine, it actually brings me a lot of joy in my life. A- Yes, I do! It sounds like you are concerned that you may not have as many choices in fall when it comes to floral arrangements. While many people assume that, fall brings its own bounty of color and variety. The choices and combinations are really quite limitless. First, I want to discuss color. When you think of fall colors, think of the color of spices and deep jewel tones. You will find astounding floral choices in colors from deep orange tones to rich reds and purples. Common colors include cinnamon, ruby, terra cotta, persimmon, and pumpkin. A few Common flower choices include: • Chrysanthemums • Gerberas • Asters • Sunflowers • Statice • Mixed Crocosmia • Dahlia • Trumpet lily Also, there is no better time than fall to complement an arrangement with other rustic elements such as dried whole slit oranges, decorative bundles of wheat, and dried herbs. The kitchen also provides a bounty of artistic elements to add to your arrangements. Another option would be high quality silk flowers or arrangements. Silks give you the advantage of long lasting beauty that you can enjoy year after year. Believe me, you are not the only one wondering "What do I do now?" with fall approaching. However, as you can see, there is no reason why you cannot enjoy your decorative floral arrangements year-round....and I think you'll find that the colors of fall are quite beautiful, like no other!

Q: Across the U.S., every February 14th we celebrate our love with candy, gifts and flowers in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and how did these traditions evolve?

A: There are actually several legends attributed to the origin of the day. The catholic church recognizes three saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred, presumably in the name of love. One legend contends that a roman priest in the third century named Valentine defied the orders of Emperor Claudius and continued to perform the marriages of young men whom the emperor wanted to remain single and fit for battle. Another tradition holds that Valentine may have been tortured for helping Christians escape persecution. Many believe that the tradition started as a way to honor and mark the day of Valentine’s death. This may be the origin of the tradition of using flowers to express love on this day, as those honoring Valentine’s death would have used flowers to mark the day. Others hold that Valentines Day grew from a Roman fertility festival, which was celebrated on the ides of February, or February 15th. While the exact beginning of the holiday is difficult to trace, it is possible to trace the modern celebration of the day. For example, the oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection and to use flowers (which each had a special meaning attributed them by kind and color) to convey love and messages in accordance with the era’s propriety. For example, red roses would convey a deep love, while lilac roses say the sender has fallen deeply in love at first sight. It was even possible to send more complete messages by using a combination of different flowers. Today we have many ways of expressing our love, still, nothing sends a message of love better or more memorably than flowers.

A: Here’s an idea, go to your florist and order a Ficus tree and bring a little life inside for the rest of the winter season. Your florist can provide pot covers for your plant baskets or maybe pottery with a touch of color in an array of shapes & textures to accent your home décor. Feeling the after Christmas let down? Try a vase of flowers on your table for the next few weeks and feel the difference! Some flowers will last a week or two. Changing the water often will help them last even longer. Tulips & spring flowers give you immediate gratification but may not last as long. Talk to your florist & they can tell you what spring flowers and longer lasting flowers go together the best. Buying flowers does not need to be expensive! Premade mixed bouquets are available at your florist. Remember, don’t fall into the post Holiday blues! Spruce up your home and enjoy the beginning of the New Year!

Q: Christmas is right around the corner and we are going with a real Christmas tree this year. We’ve always had the fake trees and I want to try something not only different, but possibly start a new family tradition with the little ones. What are some things to consider? A: Family traditions are important; they bond families together and make fond memories. Going together to pick out that perfect Christmas tree each year can be a fun and lasting family tradition that you and your kids will carry with them forever. Here are some things to consider… First, measure the designated area in your home where you envision your tree (Not only height but width and the area from the wall to walking space, etc). Remember trees look much smaller outside than they do inside. Frasier, balsam, and/or Scotch Pine type of trees are ideal for holding heavier Christmas ornaments and decorations. While White Pine & Douglas’s can hold light weight ornaments. That being said, Douglas’s are the traditional tree used during the Holidays. Next you’ll want to pick out the right tree stand that can best be used every year. A tree stand with a large flat base is ideal. Your tree lot attendant can help in picking out the right stand as it relates to usage. Tree lots can also hold your tree until the desired time of when you want to put it up or you can simply store it at home outside in a shady area. Once the tree is up, now we need to care for it so it will last the duration! Remember to ask for crystals to put in the tree water that help hold in moisture around the trunk. This will help keep it fresh, longer and don’t forget the tree bag! It makes removing your tree an easy clean up. After Christmas, I take my tree out and hang a bird feeder in it. It attracts a lot of birds and it’s really fun when it snows! Just put it in front of a window you look out of all the time, and enjoy. This time of year is also when fresh evergreen arrangements are most popular. They are arranged in wet foam and can last two to five weeks! Q: What if I just want flowers for no special occasion? I’d like to try and do my own, plus I have several (too many) vases. Can these be used? Also, what if I would like to use flowers from my garden? Thanks in advance!

A: I get these questions often, and many times, people forget that flowers aren’t just for special occasions or events. They can be used as that beautiful centerpiece at the kitchen table, or dried and arranged around the home for an elegant design! For everyday flowers, many mixed bouquets have very little greens or filler flowers arranged with it. You can find extra filler & greens at your local flower shop or just add one rose or lily to make that bouquet special. Want to try and do your own? Great! A florist can show you creative techniques to use to do just that. Also, they often have easy to do workshops that local gardeners and interested individuals enjoy! Often times, people have a lot of vases and don’t need anymore around the house. This is good! Take your favorite vase in to your local florist, and they will design an arrangement to meet your needs (and price), and if this is for a special someone, they may even deliver if you don’t have the time. If you like to use flowers from your garden, often times, floral shops can tell you what works best for your arrangement and teach you how to harden off your flowers for longer life. Again, you can buy one or two stems of what is not in bloom and extra greens. Remember, flower shops should be helpful no matter what your needs and they have an array of services you can’t get elsewhere. Utilize them to their fullest extent and create a relationship with your florist. They will be there for everyday ideas, plus the obvious memorials, birthdays, births, weddings & anniversaries, get wells, holidays and gifts! Question: Since we received several questions regarding prom flowers I decided to answer them in one response to cover all of the questions.

Answer: To begin with, prom is definitely not for the faint of heart! There’s the dress, the hair, jewelry, shoes, dinner, tux, sometimes limo and last, but not least of all, flowers. So for all of you newbie’s, here are a few pointers. Take a deep breathe...you’ll be fine! Corsages and boutonnieres are an important tradition that allows prom goers to acknowledge each other and this special occasion. Typically (back in the day) the boy bought the corsage for his date and the girl bought a boutonniere for her date. No more! Many high school students don’t even go with a date to the prom! Those who do generally follow the tradition I just spoke of, those who don’t, come in and order their own flowers. The flowers you choose should simply compliment the formal wear you have chosen. Generally a girl will purchase her gown and then her date will coordinate with what she’s wearing. When coming into the shop, knowing those colors is helpful. Expect to pay anywhere between $15.00 and $35.00 on a corsage. This could be a simple wrist corsage (Pin on prom corsages are a thing of the past!), a more embellished corsage or one on a beautiful rhinestone or beaded band. It could be a tiny nosegay, flowers for her hair or an armband. And...try to place your order at least a week before your prom date. In Southeast Kansas we, many times, have multiple proms on any given weekend, so planning early is important! The flowers most generally used in corsages are the adorable petite roses...spray roses. However, we also design with orchids, stock, wax flower and daisies. In my opinion it’s not the actual flower, it’s more about the color. Once you’ve picked up your flowers they need to be stored in a cool space until evening. Like I said before, it’s a lot of information...a lot of choices. Always rely on your florist to assist you in your purchase. Expect nothing less! It really is an important little part of a very special night in your high school student’s life. So do a little reminiscing, break out the camera and go with the flow! Here’s to a beautiful and SAFE prom night!

Question: What is the meaning of flowers on Valentine’s Day?

Answer: Generally speaking, February 14th is widely known across the world as Valentine’s Day. “A holiday created by greeting card companies or florists,” you might grumble. Actually, no...the origin of Valentine’s Day dates back to the Roman Empire, when the Emperor Claudius II decreed that no men in his army could wed. St. Valentine, a catholic priest, secretly married these young couples but was later sentenced to death for breaking the law. Folklore has it that St. Valentine sent a red rose to his jailer’s daughter before his death, thus the creation of Valentine’s Day. Now jump forward to 2011. What to send? Consider the meaning of each individual flower. Let’s take roses...red denotes deep and long lasting love. Pink signifies admiration and joy, yellow happiness and warmth and white purity and innocence. The most popular remembrance for Valentine’s Day continues to be one dozen red roses. Classic, elegant and traditional. You can’t really go wrong with these! However, consider what the recipient might like. Since 73% of Americans ordering Valentine flowers in 2009 were men, I would suggest that you consider what the recipient might like to receive. What is her favorite color? Roses come in so many beautiful colors in addition to the ones listed above....a few of my favorites are green (named Green Tea), lavender (Cool Water) or Esperance...a gorgeous ivory rose with touches of pink and green. Consider adding chocolates to the flowers. DOUBLE WHAMMY! Now when ordering please consider these tips... 1. This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday. It will be more difficult for your florist to divide the delivery over two or three days, so the majority of flowers delivered are going to go on Monday. My point is...it would benefit you to order early!! 2. Rely on your florist. A good florist will assist you with placing your order, designing the perfect floral arrangement and making sure it is delivered with “kid gloves” to your loved one. 3. Try to be understanding when ordering. There simply are a few restrictions for delivery during the Valentine’s Day rush that simply do not apply on a normal business day. For instance, most florists have difficulty delivering large balloon bouquets and “timed deliveries” usually cannot be guaranteed. At our shop we promise that deliveries to schools and businesses go out first, followed by home deliveries. 4. Expect satisfaction from your florist. The volume of floral arrangements that a designer will create for Valentine’s Day is much different that what he/she will do on a normal workday. However, it’s the ONLY arrangement your loved one will receive! Your roses should last anywhere from 5-10 days, depending on the variety you receive. Do not expect less. Sending flowers continues to be one of the easiest ways to convey love and appreciation for that someone special in your life. So consider St. Valentine when February 14th rolls around...if he can do it under those conditions it should be a “breeze” for you. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Question: I don’t know anything about flowers, so how do I order?... Do I use the internet? What about placing orders for loved ones across the country? Thanks in advance!

Answer: Great question! First and foremost...always, ALWAYS use your local florist and call them directly. Whether you are ordering with a local delivery, or a delivery that might need to be sent somewhere across the country or even internationally, your local florist will be there to assist you. Why not use the internet or a 1-800 florist instead? The answer is simple...most of the 1-800 florists know absolutely nothing about flowers or will attend to your personal needs. These are considered “Phantom Florists” known as “Order Gatherers.” It is a multimillion dollar industry that, in many occasions, use deceptive advertising to lure in customers who are looking for an easy way to place their flower orders. Here’s how it works...The “Order Gatherers” advertise either on the internet or in a phone book, you call or place your order over the internet, pay for your order with a credit card, then these operators who work at a call center simply place the order to a flower shop in the town where the delivery is to be made. They make their money through inflation of prices and charging bogus delivery and/or “service” fees. By calling your local flower shop, you will speak directly to a florist whose business is to make ordering flowers easy, answer all of your questions and make giving flowers to someone you love, Or have lost, trouble free...and special for the recipient! And, should there be some sort of issue following delivery, you can call back and voice your displeasure...Sadly, chances are, you will never speak to a human with the “Order Gatherers.” If you are not familiar with how to order flowers, just let the florist walk you through the process. Things to think about before you call would be...How much do you want to spend?...How do you want the enclosure card to be signed?...Does the recipient have a favorite flower, or color, the designer can work with? And remember you’ll need the address and, if possible, a phone number for the recipient. A competent florist/designer should walk you through all of this and will sincerely appreciate your order. In this situation, you definitely “get what you pay for.” So if you’re going to spend the time and money on a loved one for something as special as fresh flowers, do it right. Let the expert in your local flower shop design something beautiful that says, I Love You...I’m sorry...Get Well or “I’m thinking of you.” More next month...

They’re also one of the last flowers to leave the garden, blooming prolifically from August through October. Asters have 1” daisy-like flowers two to three weeks prior to mum blossoms. The Dwarf type are compact, 18” mounded plants and the New England type are 3-6’ tall. Asters should be planted in either the fall or spring in moist, well-drained soil. They prefer full sun, but they will tolerate light shading. It’s also important to amend the soil with organic matter prior to planting. Other perennials or bulbs with fall interest: Anemones, Boltonia, Colchicum, Coreopsis, Crocus, Lycoris and Tricyrtis, along with ornamental grasses. Annuals: Flowering Cabbage and Kale While these are listed as flowering cabbage and kale, they are planted in the fall for their colorful leaves, not their flowers. In our region, it is best to plant ornamental cabbage and kale in September or in October. As the temperatures cool down, these plants come alive with vibrant shades of pink and white on plants reaching up to 12” tall and 18-24” in diameter. They are frost hardy and can often last in the landscape until mid-February. Pansies Planted in masses, pansies add the perfect punch of color to the landscape. September is the best time to plant pansies in our area. A fall planting allows the plants to grow a deeper root system, which allows them to grow further into next summer. Pansies prefer well-drained soil and are hardy to -20 degrees. You will need to water and fertilize your pansies now and throughout the winter and spring. For your efforts, they will reward you with colorful blossoms in the dead of winter and big, gorgeous flowers next spring. Other annuals with fall interest: Cassia alata and Salvia leucantha With these simple additions, you too can enjoy one last blast of color before winter takes hold. Answer: With the seasonal change to fall, a variety of flowers come to life in the garden, showcasing their vibrant colors to accent the landscape. At Botanica, the most dramatic change in the fall is the color in our woody plant collection. Woody plants like trees and shrubs shift from their varying shades of green to bold and brilliant shades of yellow, orange, red and brown, putting on a spectacular show in the Gardens. Here is a listing of trees and shrubs that provide great color to the landscape during the fall season. Legacy Sugar Maple: The Legacy Sugar Maple boasts reddish-orange to red fall color. It reaches a mature height of 45-50’ with a 30-35’ spread. The Legacy Sugar Maple is the most consistent maple for fall color year after year. Caddo Sugar Maple: Caddo is the last Maple to color in the Garden, but it is worth the wait. It has yellow, orange or red fall color, depending on the tree. Reaches a mature height of 40-45’ height with a 30-35’ spread. Caddo leaves are thicker and tougher than any other sugar maple, which makes it resist leaf tatter and drought, leaving more leaves to color in the fall. October Glory Red Maple: October Glory features deep red to reddish-purple fall color. It reaches a mature height of 35-40’ with a 30-35’ spread. October Glory seems to hold up better to our hot summer temperatures than other maple varieties with the bonus of a beautiful red color. Autumn Blaze Maple: Autumn Blaze has brilliant orange-red fall color. It reaches a mature height of 40-45’ with a 35-40’ spread. This variety is a hybrid cross between red and silver maples, selected for its drought tolerance and its outstanding, long-lasting red color. Shantung Maple: Shantung Maples are small in stature, but are showy all year. It features shiny, dark-green foliage on its branches all summer with spectacular late fall color in shades from yellow-orange to red. Reaches a mature height of 30-35’ with a 20-25’ spread. Beyond maples, the Chinese Pistache (Orange to red to purple), Shumard Oak (Dark red), Aristocrat Pear (Deep red), Black Gum Tree (Yellow to orange to scarlet) and Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (Bright red) are also great selections for fall color. Reds and oranges seem to be the preferred colors for fall foliage, but the clear yellows of the American Elm, Weeping Willow, Gingko, River Birch and Osage Orange set the stage throughout the Gardens and perfectly complement the orange and red hues. Shrubs are also great woody plants to consider for fall color. The fall color from shrubs helps tie the color of mums and other fall blooming perennials up to the color in the trees, filling the garden with bold hues of yellow, orange, red, pink and purple. Highlighted selections include: • Regent Serviceberry: Red fall color. 3-5’ height and 3-5’ spread. • Henry’s Garnet Virginia Sweetspire: Scarlet fall color. Question: What annuals should I plant in my home landscape?

Answer: While perennials and bulbs go in and out of bloom, annuals provide the garden with season-long color and continuity. At Botanica, many of our annuals are selected because of their heat and drought tolerance and as the temperature increases, they really begin to shine. As June turns up the heat, here is a list of “hot” summer annuals, recommended for your yard by our garden staff. Begonia ‘Big Red with Bronze Leaf’: This new variety of begonia claims to grow in sun and shade and produce 2.5 inch red flowers above glossy bronze foliage. It is 12 to 18” in height and 18” in width and blooms from summer to frost. Coleus ‘Dark Chocolate’: Coleus are great plants to provide color to your garden. Available in multiple varieties, their wide array of colors and textures are sure to make an impact on even the smallest space. This new variety has a deep chocolate color and thrives in part to full shade. It reaches a mature height of 24 to 30 inches with a spread of 18 to 24 inches. Lantana: This is the number one annual for attracting butterflies. It comes in multi and single colored flowers and a few varieties have variegated foliage. The upright form reaches heights of 24 to 36” and the trailing form grows 8 to 12” in height with a 24” spread. Ornamental Peppers: ‘Jigsaw’ has been our favorite variety of Ornamental Pepper. It has purple and white foliage and reaches a height of 18” with ½”- ¾” triangular fruit that turns from purple to red as it matures. Two new All-American Selections introduced over the past few years are also good performers. ‘Chilli Chilli’ and ‘Black Pearl’ are great plants for adding texture to the garden. We also like ‘Purple Flash,’ a variety similar to ‘Jigsaw,’ but with darker foliage. Pentas: This is the second best annual for attracting butterflies to your garden. These plants range in height from 18 to 24” and come in flower colors of white, pink, red and violet. New seed varieties are also making this plant more economical to produce for the home gardener. We especially like the variety ‘Graffiti Red Lace’ for its intense red flowers and contrasting white stigmas. Rudbeckia ‘Cherry Brandy’: This new variety has masses of 3 inch, cherry red flowers, a new color in Rudbeckias. It claims to be heat tolerant and bloom from mid-summer to frost. It requires full sun and will reach a mature height of 20 to 24 inches with an 18 inch spread. Sweet Potato Vine (Ornamental): At least 15 varieties of ornamental sweet potato vine can be found at local garden centers. The foliage ranges in shades of green, yellow, purple, bronze and tri-colored varieties. The leaf shape can also vary from heart-shaped to several cut leaf forms to a more standard triangular form. With a trailing habit that spreads between 5 to 20’, these plants are perfect in a container or for covering a hillside or retaining wall. Torenia ‘Summer Wave’: This annual comes in shades of blue, white, pink, purple, yellow and violet. This variety is heat loving and will tolerate full sun, although afternoon shade is always welcomed. The plant has an 8” height and an 18 to 24” spread. The common name for this plant is Wishbone Flower and because it is low growing, it works well in hanging baskets, containers and front edgings. Zinnia (linearis or angustifolia): This is a small zinnia, having a height and spread of 12 to 15” with a ¾” flower. It is available in shades of orange, yellow and white. This heat loving plant is never out of bloom, never looks unkempt, and does not require deadheading. Also known as a Creeping Zinnia, it is best planted in front borders and edgings. Question: What can I do for my garden to save money without sacrificing beauty?

Answer: Being frugal in the garden doesn’t mean that you won’t pay for anything or that you’ll only buy the cheapest of something. The best thing that you can do to save money is to evaluate the needs of your landscape (from tools & equipment, plant material, to fertilizer and other maintenance supplies) and purchase what is most important or necessary to you. Here are a few suggestions on what you can do in your garden to save money this growing season: • Start plants from seed- Buy named cultivar seeds and plant them indoors 6-8 weeks before placing them in the garden. Seeds do cost more of your time, but save money over purchasing more mature plants. • Make your own organic matter- Composting your yard waste and kitchen scraps is an efficient use of resources and results in a useful product for the garden that would have otherwise been wasted. • Divide and conquer- Divide your perennials and share them with neighbors or join a local garden club and swap with other club members. • Shop at flower shows and sales- Get great deals on proven plants at flower shows and sales throughout the year. Question: What is Botanica’s Woodland Bird Garden?

Answer: Opening on June 15, The Woodland Bird Garden is the 25th themed garden at Botanica, The Wichita Gardens. This garden is dedicated to habitat development for attracting and sustaining wildlife populations. According to the National Audubon Society, 20 species of common North American birds have suffered drastic population declines over the past 40 years. Farming, urban development and other factors that cause a direct loss of habitat are to blame for most of the declines, but climate change is also a growing threat. Botanica has always been attractive to birds because the landscape provides the four fundamental things that a bird needs to survive: food, water, shelter and space. However, there has never been a garden area specifically dedicated to the viewing of the more than 93 species that have been documented in the Gardens over the past ten years. The Woodland Bird Garden is an enhanced natural habitat that will display trees, shrubs, perennial and annual plantings that provide food, shelter and/or nesting sites for a variety of native and migratory bird species year-round. Interpretive signage will allow the visitor to learn more about identifying birds, feeding preferences and the plants to use in the home landscape to enhance the habitat to attract birds. Birdfeeders will supplement the plant material during the seasons where natural food is scarce and provide concentrated populations of birds for our visitors’ viewing pleasure. Make plans to visit Botanica to find out what you can do to help restore and sustain bird populations in our area and the simple things that you can do to make your habitat more friendly for our feathered friends. Question: What shrubs and trees should I plant for spring interest?

Answer: When people typically think of woody plants, they tend to focus on trees and shrubs with fall interest, relishing in the bold fall colors and interesting berries, fruits and seedpods. However, spring brings us a host of woody plants that provide an abundance of blossoms and add vertical interest to the garden. In this issue, I’ve highlighted a few spring stunners, sure to add a punch to the spring landscape in your garden. •SHRUBS Flowering shrubs soften the spring landscape and provide brilliant backdrops to the cheery floral displays. Boxwood and Winter Honeysuckle are two of the most fragrant early spring shrubs. They have very inconspicuous flowers, but fill the air with their aromas. Nothing lights up the spring landscape like Forsythia. This early blooming shrub has vibrant yellow flowers that seem to symbolize the coming of spring. We have four types of Forsythia and four types of Exochorda (Pearlbush) at Botanica. The Exochorda covers itself in white, popcorn-shaped flowers just before the foliage emerges. Over the summer, the seed heads mature to brown, woody, star-shaped capsules that persist all winter. Viburnums are very versatile in the garden because they can grow in moderate shade to full-sun exposure. A few varieties are grown in Wichita. Carliesie, Juddi and Cyuga have very fragrant, early-spring flowers and you can get varying degrees of fall color on some varieties. Marissii and Shasta are two of the varieties that bloom on top of long horizontal branches. •TREES Botanica has six types of Cercis (Redbuds), another common spring bloomer that makes a dramatic statement in the garden. The Redbud has a grayish bark that allows the flowers to showcase themselves before any sign of leaves arrive. Dark purple buds cluster along the length of each branch, eventually opening into deep pinkish-purple blossoms that highlight the branches beautifully. 
 Amelanchier is a plant that provides beauty and interest in multiple seasons. It covers itself in clumps of single, white flowers at the same time as the tulip display is in bloom. In the summer, the flowers give way to dark, blueberry-like fruit, which is why they are called Saskatoon Blueberry in Canada. Finally, in autumn, the leaves burst into a blaze of fantastic reddish-orange, showing us what fall color really is. Malus (Crabapples), come in dwarf shrub forms, weeping forms, and seemingly upright forms. Their vibrant flowers are followed by fruit of varying sizes and colors depending on the variety. The breeding trend over the last ten years has been for smaller fruit that persists on the trees through winter. This is just a sampling of the spring blooming trees and shrubs that are featured throughout the Gardens at Botanica, but we have many more in our expanded woody collection. Together, they complement and serve as backdrops to our colorful spring bulb displays. Speaking of spring bulbs, last fall we added four new varieties of daffodils to our collection, which exceeds 100,000 bulbs and we planted more than 44,000 tulip bulbs from A (ABBA) to Z (Zurel). More than 80 varieties were planted for this season’s display, including many that have never been planted in Wichita before. What should I add to my landscape in the fall?

Answer: Fall planting season is just around the corner. Autumn is the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs and even perennials. Soil temperatures are still warm and will allow for roots to establish and trees and shrubs planted after the high heat of summer will have a head start for next spring. The hardest question is what to add to your landscape. Sure, you COULD play it safe and go with the “same old, same old” but most people are tempted to try something different. The question is- what? Here are a few suggestions of good performers to plant now and enjoy later. Echinacea- Maybe it’s a new perennial that you’re wanting to add to a sunny spot. Botanica added five new varieties of Echinacea, or coneflower, to the existing 19 varieties in the Gardens. You can find about every shade of color in Echinacea, from many shades of pink and purple to white, mango, orange and yellow. They vary in height, the way they hold their petals and in their bloom size but all perform well in this region. Hydrangea Quercifolia ‘Snowflake’- If you are in the market for a shrub that will have 4-6’ height and spread for a partly shady, well-drained site, then I have just the plant for you! It is a Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snowflake’. This plant has panicles of flower clusters that will be 12-15” long. Bloom time is in May, but the flowers age gracefully on the plant and create interest throughout the summer and into fall. The foliage is large, dark green, oak-shaped and will have a spectacular fall color ranging from wine-red to purple to deep rich burgundy. If this isn’t enough to entice you, the winter texture of peeling bark from the stems will surely convince you to consider this plant for your yard. Schizachyrium Scoparium ‘The Blues’- If it is a sunny area of your yard that needs a special plant, then you need to see the new variety of Little Bluestem called “The Blues.” It has an eye-catching erect habit with an indescribable blue color throughout the summer and showy purple-bronze seed heads in the fall. This plant would be perfect in a full-sun, hot and dry area of your yard and has a height of only 2-4’. ILEX x ‘Conaf’- Perhaps it is winter interest that your yard is needing. This year we are trying a new variety of holly at Botanica: Ilex x ‘Conaf’ or Oak Leaf Red Holly. As the name implies, the leaves are oak-shaped and the plant has a tall, pyramidal form growing to around a 14’ height with an 8’ width. As with other hollies, this plant will need some protection from the full, hot sun. As you know, the plant choices are many, and Botanica is the perfect place to see how these plants will grow in Wichita’s myriad of weather conditions. What should one be aware of when planning a backyard pond?

Answer: Ponds are one of the most exciting new trends in home landscaping. They can range from simple concepts in containers to elaborate fountains, waterfalls and ponds. Gardening with aquatics is similar to other forms of gardening in that you have to be aware of proper soil conditions, kinds of containers, proper planting techniques and plant maintenance. What makes water gardening unique is that the plants are growing in a water filled environment. Here are the basics of selecting aquatic plants for your water garden. Location, Location, Location- Perhaps the most important consideration in water gardening is choosing the right spot. Most aquatic plants and fish need plenty of sun, so a site that gets direct sun for most of the day is best. To get the best light and avoid the accumulation of leaf debris, choose a site away from tall shrubs and trees. Plant Selection- Your plant selection depends on the size of the garden and the kind of look you want. Some plants can add drama and fragrance while others provide oxygen to help keep the garden healthy. Other considerations, such as water depth and amount of sunlight need to also be taken into account when choosing plant material. When choosing aquatic plants, keep in mind that the plants should cover at least 50 - 60 percent of the water surface. In general, aquatic plants are very aggressive, so be careful not to overbuy. Aquatic plants can be divided into three major categories: emergent, submerged and floaters. Both floating leafed and submerged plants are needed for a healthy pond and need to be included in your selection. Fish can also be a beneficial addition, because they clean up debris and help control mosquito larva and other insects. Main features- Hardy and Tropical Water Lilies are often the main feature of a water garden. Hardy Water Lilies come in colors of white, yellow, pink and red. These are available in a variety of sizes from miniature to large, so there are plants available for any size of water garden. Tropical Water Lilies are the only way to get water lilies with purple and blue flower colors, but are also available in shades of white, yellow, pink and red. They hold their flowers above the water surface on longer stems instead of on top of the surface. Day and night blooming varieties are available. Floating plants like water hyacinths and water lettuce help to cover the water surface and have long root systems that help to filter impurities out of the water. Marginal plants serve as background plants to the main features in a water garden. These plants can add color and texture to your garden: lotus, sagittarius, dwarf bamboo, iris, cattails, and sweet flag. Submerged plants- these plants remain beneath the water surface. Often called oxygenators, submerged plants help combat algae and improve water quality. Plants include: anacharis, bacopa, cabomba and milfoil. What annuals should I plant in my home landscape?

Answer:While perennials and bulbs go in and out of bloom, annuals provide the garden with season-long color and continuity. At Botanica, many of our annuals are selected because of their heat and drought tolerance and as the temperature increases, they really begin to shine. As June turns up the heat, here is a list of “hot” summer annuals, recommended for your yard by our garden staff. Evolvulus: This is a low prostrate plant with a 4-6” height and a 24” spread. It has a grey-green foliage with small, sky blue flowers and is great for hanging baskets or front edgings. Lantana: This is the number one annual for attracting butterflies. It comes in multi and single colored flowers and a few varieties have variegated foliage. The upright form reaches heights of 24-36” and the trailing form grows 8-12” in height with a 24” spread. Lisianthus: This is a plant with a height ranging from 10-24”. It has a silver-green foliage and the flower colors range from whites, to pinks, purples, reds and bi-colors. This plant stays very narrow, so it should be planted on 6” centers or it should be interplanted with another annual, like dusty miller, for upright support and contrast. Ornamental Peppers: ‘Jigsaw’ has been our favorite variety of Ornamental Pepper. It has purple and white foliage and reaches a height of 18” with ½”- ¾” triangular fruit that turns from purple to red as it matures. Two new All-American Selections introduced over the past few years are also good performers. ‘Chilli Chilli’ and ‘Black Pearl’ are great plants for adding texture to the garden. Pentas: This is the second best annual for attracting butterflies to your garden. These plants range in height from 18-24” and come in flower colors of white, pink, red and violet. New seed varieties are also making this plant more economical to produce for the home gardener. Sweet Potato Vine (Ornamental): At least 15 varieties of ornamental sweet potato vine can be found at local garden centers. The foliage ranges in shades of green, yellow, purple, bronze and tri-colored varieties. The leaf shape can also vary from heart-shaped to several cut leaf forms to a more standard triangular form. With a trailing habit that spreads between 5-20’, these plants are perfect in a container or for covering a hillside or retaining wall. Torenia ‘Summer Wave’: This annual comes in shades of blue, white, pink, purple, yellow and violet. This variety is heat loving and will tolerate full sun, although afternoon shade is always welcomed. The plant has an 8” height and an 18-24” spread. The common name for this plant is Wishbone Flower and because it is low growing, it works well in hanging baskets, containers and front edgings. Zinnia Profusion: This is a wonderful new selection of zinnia. The plant gets 15-18” in height and spread and has clean, mildew resistant foliage. Available flower colors are white, orange, yellow, pink and fire. There is also a double form available in the pink color. Zinnia (linearis or angustifolia): This is a small zinnia, having a height and spread of 12-15” with a ¾” flower. It is available in shades of orange, yellow and white. This heat loving plant is never out of bloom, never looks unkempt, and does not require deadheading. Also known as a Creeping Zinnia, it is best planted in front borders and edgings. How can I attract butterflies to my yard?

Butterfly gardens, like butterflies, are not limited to botanical gardens and arboreta. Whether in a few containers, or a large plot, you can create a garden retreat to attract butterflies to your yard. Regardless of where you live, the general requirements for butterfly gardening are the same: full sun, a puddling place, nectar source plants, larval host plants, a pesticide-free environment, and knowledge of local butterfly species. A Place To Catch Some Rays: Both butterflies, and the plants they prefer, like bright sunny areas protected from high winds. On cool mornings, butterflies need to warm their bodies before they can become active. As you begin to plan your butterfly garden, look for areas around your yard that have at least six hours of sun each day and provide windbreaks through the use of shrubs, fences or other barriers. A Watering Hole: Groups of butterflies often gather in wet sand or mud to obtain the minerals and moisture that are found in the soil. This activity is called puddling. You can create a puddling place in your garden by placing a shallow pan in the soil, filling it with coarse sand, and keeping it moist. A sweet spot: Nectar plants produce the sweet fluid that many insects, including butterflies, use as food. Many of our native butterflies are attracted to plants that are brilliant in color and have either clusters of short tubular flowers, or flowers with large, flat petals. Because butterflies are active from early spring through frost, include a mix of plants in your garden that will bloom throughout this entire time to attract butterflies all season. Baby Food: Nectar-producing plants will attract butterflies to your garden, but in order to support a full lifecycle, host plants must also be present. Because caterpillars are unable to travel far to find their own food, the female locates and lays her eggs on the only type of plant that the caterpillar can use as food. If you do not like plants in your garden that have been eaten by insects, you may want to locate host plants in areas with low visibility but in fairly close proximity to the nectar plants. Butterflies Are Insects: The use of insecticides will kill many butterflies and their caterpillars. If a pest problem develops in your butterfly garden, try using biological controls, such as ladybugs, lacewings and preying mantis as a first line of defense. Know Your Butterflies: Many butterfly species are very selective about their nectar and host plants and in many cases, they will only use one species of plant. In order to attract butterflies and raise caterpillars, you must know the plant preferences of the butterflies native to your area. How can I successfully grow tulips in Kansas?

Tulips say “spring” like no other flower. The vivid yellow, red, pink, purple, and orange flowers are a feast for the eyes and weary the dull browns, grays, and whites of winter. Though the ever-changing Kansas climate can be a challenge, the staff of Botanica, The Wichita Gardens has some tips for you to grow beautiful tulips in your own landscape. SELECT THE RIGHT BULBS: • Buy 12+ centimeter bulbs. The bigger the bulb you plant, the bigger the bloom will be. • Species type tulip bulbs perennialize better than other varieties of bulbs, but they have an early bloom season. In contrast, Hybrid type tulip bulbs are bred for bigger flowers, but have a shorter life span and are available in early, mid and late bloom seasons. • Extend your tulip bloom season by selecting early, mid and late season bulbs. PLANT BULBS PROPERLY: • Plant bulbs out of the wind. High wind and warm temperatures are the worst conditions for tulips because they age the flower. • If you are planting tulips as perennials, plant them at least eight inches deep so that the bulb does not divide, resulting in larger flowers year after year. • Planting tulips in mass makes a larger visual effect in the garden. When planting in mass, pair hot colors (reds, yellows, oranges) together or pastel colors (pinks and purples) together for increased impact. MAINTAIN YOUR BULBS: • Treat the ground with a balanced fertilizer at planting time to feed this year’s blooms and after the flower falls off to help the plant set next year’s bloom. • After the bloom season, break the seed head off of the stem, but do not remove the leaves and stem until they turn brown and collapse. The leaves and stem supply nutrients back into the bulb to help produce next year’s flower bud. Removing these too early will deplete the flower size the following year. • Watch for pests such as gophers, squirrels and raccoons. If they bother your bulbs too much they may have to be trapped or removed from your garden. Question: I’ve recently become engaged to be married and don’t know where to start when selecting flowers or a florist for our wedding. What advice can you give me?

Answer: Well, before we begin discussing your flowers, please let me extend my sincere congratulations and thanks for the opportunity be of some help in your planning. The first priority in planning your wedding is to book the date with a florist. My opinion is that it is never too early to line up all of your vendors. And by vendors I’m referring to reception facility, DJ, florist, caterer, etc. Prior to your first floral consultation I would recommend your first select your dress, the bridesmaid dresses and have your color palette in place. In addition, spending sometime on the internet looking at flowers is advised so that you have an idea what to tell your florist, so that they can get an idea of what most appeals to your taste. On your first visit with a florist, you should decide on exactly what it is you’re expecting...are you looking for a florist to simply design your bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres? Are you wanting flowers to decorate your church and are you in need of centerpieces or floral arrangements to decorate your reception facility? What flowers do you just absolutely love? What don’t you like? You should also nail down dates, times, locations, budget and all of the other specifics that surround your wedding. If you don’t have answers to these questions, don’t panic. A good florist will walk you through all of this. One of the first questions brides ask is, “What flowers are in season?” Because flowers are grown all over the world, primarily Holland and Equador, then shipped to the United States, availability is seldom an issue. There are, of course, exceptions (peonies being one of them) but for the most part, whatever you might want should be available. Some of the most popular flowers trending right now for weddings are calla lilies, asiatic lilies, roses and orchids. Naturally we florists love it when our couples have no budget restraints, but currently a bigger issue than flower availability is, in fact, budget. As so many of the popular flowers that many brides see on the internet or in bridal magazines are more costly, I advise them to allow their florist to incorporate some less expensive blooms along with their “must haves.” Again...a bride should never leave her consultation without the flowers she loves somehow included in her budget! Following your consultation, you should have a general idea of the expense and information regarding payment policy and delivery as well as an understanding of the florist’s cancellation policy. At some point during your planning all of the cost and effort may become tiresome. My advice for you would be to let the people you’ve hired do their jobs. After all, they’re working for YOU! And know that while its been sometimes tedious to plan, it will all seem worthwhile on your day when your are surrounded by friends and family while marrying the love of your life.
