What is 'Summer Youth Beat'?
Question:  What is this program I have heard about called Summer Youth Beat.  How does it work?  How do businesses participate?
ANSWER:  Summer Youth B.E.A.T. is a program originating with the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas.  B.E.A.T. stands for Business Education And Training. The pilot program was developed in 2003 by the participating youth: including initiating the project, determining eligibility and participation requirements.  The 2003 program was very successful!  Eighteen youths were certified by completing three weeks of training on attendance, attire, teamwork, ethics and interviewing skills.  Of those, 14 were employed through participating businesses, 4 obtained employment on their own.  The youth involved must meet certain eligibil  ity requirements including:• Documented 2.5 grade point average• Excellent standing in school (no disciplinary  actions, good attendance)• 2 Letters of recommendation• Low socio-economic conditions
