Making thin hair appear thicker
Question:  I have long hair, but it's thin and becomes stringy by mid-day.  Do you have any suggestions on how to make it appear thicker? Will hair coloring help, or should I keep it healthy?
ANSWER:  Well you're in luck, as there are many different products, treatments, and services to help solve your problem. It's time to put a stop to the bad hair days!  Thinner hair is usually classified as fine hair, which generally is lacking protein. This is, in part, the cause of your hair looking stringy. The first suggestion would be to begin some protein treatments. (Your hairdresser can recommend the right treatment for your hair.) Once you have done that, the answer to your problem could be as simple as finding the right products for your hair. Often, over the counter products contain waxes that seem to solve your problem, but on a short-term basis. Over time, the wax builds up on your hair and weighs your hair down making it appear limp and stringy.  Professional product lines carry many different products that will suit your needs. For instance, a thickening spray-gel that the main ingredient in the product is water. This makes the product very light, which is very important to thin hair. Also, there are body building shampoos and conditioners, and root boosting products that you spray directly on the scalp. The product actually swells on the hair strand as your hair dries, giving body and lift. Another important factor is making sure you keep your hair professionally trimmed every 4-6 weeks. Hair that is too long will start to become flat because of the weight. Now to address your question about coloring your hair. Yes, coloring will definitely help in giving your hair extra body and fullness. If this were your goal, you would want to add body building styling products to help. Also, you will want to change your shampoo and conditioner to something safe for color-treated hair. Never think that colored hair cannot be healthy, the key is to take proper care of your colored treated hair. Your hair is an important part of your body that continually needs moisture, vitamins, and protein.
