Can mom live in multi-level home?
: We are thinking about moving my mother into our home, but the room we have in mind is upstairs, and she doesn't climb stairs well. Is there an affordable lift of some kind that will work without a lot of construction, and still allow the rest of the household access to the stairs?
ANSWER: Installing a Stair-Chair is an economical way for someone to regain access to his or her whole house. There are several Stair-Chairs on the market that can solve your problem. If you have a straight stairwell, there are different models available for under $3,000, installed. Most units today are even battery powered, allowing them to be used in the event of a power failure. The batteries last for 3-4 years, and are cheaper than a car battery to replace.Stair-Chairs can be installed in almost every home style, from split-level to curve, or multiple landing stairs. The units have a swivel chair allowing easy access on and off of the chair, and they fold up when not in use permitting normal foot traffic. Most models attach directly to the stair treads, so installation time on a straight unit usually takes less than 4 hours. An electrical outlet close to the stairs is required, to provide power for the unit or the charger, depending on the model. Most dealers will give free in-home visits to measure the stairs and prepare an accurate estimate.
