How do I keep the bugs out?
: My basement is not currently used for living space but I am in the process of finishing it. My problem is, I have spiders and other insects that come in through my window seals, what can I do to solve this problem?
ANSWER: One suggestion would be to hire an exterminator not only for the inside of your home but also for the area around the exterior. Another would be installing window coverings; this will greatly reduce the amount of moisture around the window area that could be attracting bugs and pests. One might consider both options to ensure protection! The window coverings are installed to the outside of your home and with their bubble design, allow rain to run away from the windows instead of building up around them. This will also reduce the amount of damage caused by moisture to your window seals. Windows coverings are generally found to be made of two materials; clear-ridged vinyl or acrylic. The ridged vinyl is 1/32nd of an inch thick, where the acrylic is 3/16th inch thick. The thick acrylic plastic better resists damage caused by natural elements and lawn equipment. Besides being thicker than ridged vinyl, acrylic window coverings are easier to install, non-yellowing, and offer a longer life span. Better protection of your window seals will prevent windows from rusting and help prevent wood deterioration. Uncovered basement window wells are open pits that can cause injury for people and pets unfortunate enough to fall into them. They are also favorite spots for thieves to gain access into your home. Window wells provide safety and security, as they cannot be opened from the outside. Wildlife experts recommend that all window wells be covered to prevent animals from falling inside and ultimately dying. Window wells over 4 inches deep are essentially traps waiting to catch some unsuspecting animal that falls in. In our experience the most common animal found in window wells is skunks. Skunks have poor eyesight and when walking at night regularly fall into these wells as they walk alongside your home. Covering your window well will prevent this unfortunate occurrence from happening.
