Why choose hospice?
: When should I or my loved one make a decision to enter into a Hospice program?
ANSWER: Generally one is ready for hospice care when they have a terminal illness like cancer, or other diseases that have reached an end stage. In most cases the primary physician is a good source in determining and recommending the need for Hospice care.  The Hospice staff follows these signs and symptoms to qualify care:A. Consistence and progressive decline in health status.B. Progression from independent ambulation to wheelchair to bed bound status.C. Progression from independence in most or all activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, feeding to needing major assistance by a caretaker.D. Loss of bladder and bowel function.E. Poor appetite associated with continuing weight loss, dehydration, weakness,  inability to swallow, and in occasion progression from normal to pureed diet.F. Decline in mental ability including verbal communication, memory loss, and confusion.G. Rapid decline in health status evidenced by increased emergency room visits,  hospitalizations and physician office visits in the last 3 - 6 months.H. Frequent infections, complicated and non-healing wounds, difficulty breathing,  swelling of legs, uncontrolled pain, etc.Any one of these symptoms should be an indication that you or your loved one is in need of Hospice.  In this case, you should take a proactive approach to seek Hospice care by visiting with your health care provider. If you need further assistance or information, please contact a Hospice provider for a free in-home consultation.
