Olive oil as a home remedy?
: Some time ago you wrote about "home remedy" beauty treatments. I've heard that Olive Oil is the newest home remedy secret for skin care…do you know anything about its uses?
ANSWER: I have heard of olive oil being used as a natural moisturizer for skin and nails, but I have not tried any of its uses other than in the kitchen. I did a little research, and here are some of the suggested uses that I found for olive oil. Some of the methods come from years past, before there were commercially prepared beauty aids. They have been tested and approved over hundreds of years and are said to really work. Still others are new on the scene, as women continue to experiment, looking for a better, safer and cheaper method of skin care. Keeping your skin soft and smooth is basic to beauty. If you try any of these methods, please let me know the results! • For a facial, wet face thoroughly and massage olive oil into your skin. Use about a half teaspoon of sugar and scrub your face with that, then wipe off gently with a warm, wet cloth until all the sugar is removed.• A mixture of 1/2 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup water used as a night cream will make your skin glow. The olive oil softens and moisturizes and the vinegar lightens discolorations, kills bacteria and loosens dead skin cells. Splash water on your face before applying. • Olive oil can be used as cleansing cream if your skin is dry. • Apply olive oil to your feet at night and cover with clean white cotton socks. This helps to soften feet and it absorbs better than baby oil. • Pour a couple of drops in your hands and rub into elbows. • Shave your legs in the bathtub using olive oil. Not only will it serve as a shaving lotion, but will soften your entire body. Two to three tablespoons will do the trick. • Put a few drops of it in warm water to soak nails before an at-home manicure.• For a hand scrub, rub in olive oil then scrub with sugar and wash.• Melted with some beeswax and poured into a small tin, olive oil makes great lip balm.• Also, adding olive oil to melted beeswax creates a great cream for feet and hands and any other dry areas. It will even help with calluses so dry and thick they've cracked. Apply and cover with socks or cotton gloves. You can also add spices or essential oils to make it smell nice for gift giving. And finally, a teaspoon of olive oil before you go to bed at night will eliminate snoring. You can use this tip yourself, or save it for the spouse that keeps you up at night snoring!
