How do we plan for remodeling?
: My husband and I plan on beginning our home remodeling project after the New Year. There is a lot to consider, so how do we make sure that everything ends up the way we want it to?
ANSWER: The first step in the process is to conceptualize your project. Do you have a finite vision on how you want each room to look? You and your husband should go to a friend's home and get ideas. You can also go to stores like the Home Depot and Lowe's, and browse the aisles looking for ideas. While doing this, set a primary objective for your project. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you simply want a new look, or are you looking for more room? Take this concept, and use it as a basis for your project. It is very important to make sure that you have your final idea for each room set in stone before beginning the project. The last thing you would want is to start a large project such as this, and change your mind halfway through. This would cause nothing but headache and hard-earned dollars.Another important aspect to consider in the remodeling project is time. This is also why it is important to conceptualize your task prior to starting. It will save time and money in the end to have all details finalized. All commercial builders use this concept-which is why most commercial projects run more smoothly than personal, residential projects. Also, in remodeling, it is easy to get either entirely enveloped in a project, or sidetracked completely. Before beginning, take the time to set a calendar for your project. Set up a time frame for each room, giving you plenty of time to work’ eliminating the stress factor. Another small detail to consider is moving items out of the way. The last thing you need in a large project such as home remodeling is to spill paint on your grandmother's favorite doily. Pack up what you don't need during the process and put in a box to keep it away from dust and paint. If necessary, cover up important items and furniture with plastic to keep it safe as well.A great way to keep organized throughout the entire process is by keeping a binder, or file on your project. If you are looking for detail, you can even create a tab or subfolder for each room. By keeping files in a cabinet, or even a simple 3-ring binder, all of your paperwork, invoices, color samples, swatches and ideas can be kept in one place.
