What is Serengeti?
QUESTION: What does the word Serengeti mean?
ANSWER: It was 1913 and great stretches of Africa were still unknown to white men when Stewart Edward White, an American hunter, set out from Nairobi, pushing south. He recorded, “We walked for miles over burnt out country, then I saw the green trees from the river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise.” He had found Serengeti. In the years since, white excursion under “the high noble are of the cloudless African sky,” Serengeti has come to symbolize paradise to many of us. The Massai who had grazed their cattle on the vast grassy plains for millennia had always thought so. To them, it was Siringitu-“the place where land moves on forever”- endless plains. The Serengeti is located in the East Africa countries of Tanzania and Kenya, and occupies 5,700 sq. miles. It’s unrivaled concentrations of wildlife, stunningly beautiful landscapes and vast pristine areas make the Serengeti the best national park in the whole of Africa. The Serengeti ecosystem supports not only the largest herds of migrating Ungulates, but also one of the highest concentrations of large predators in the world. The numbers are astonishing: wildebeest at 1.7 million, zebras at 250,000, gazelles at 440,000, hyenas, the most numerous of the large carnivores at 9,000, lions at 2,800 and leopards at 1,000.Serengeti is mostly famous for the spectacular wildlife spectacle in Africa- the northward wildebeest migration from mid-May to mid-June. During this time, the migratory herds thunder north through the predator-rich areas from the central and western Serengeti, creating and exciting backdrop from which to witness the big cats in action. This is Serengeti.
