Peer pressure and dieting
Question:   Whenever I try to lose weight my friends try to get me to eat.  They tell me I’m fine and try to get me to make unhealthy choices.  What can I do?

ANSWER: Our peers affect us.  We talk about peer pressure with our kids and teach them to learn to think on their own and not succumb to peer pressure.  Yet while we think in terms of smoking, drinking, doing drugs and a myriad of other things we want our kids to avoid, we forget that the same social pressures exist for us in regards to overeating, While we want our kids to avoid certain negative behaviors so they’ll grow up to be happy, healthy adults, we sabotage our own goals of health and happiness by choosing to associate with people who are negative influences.
It takes six positive relationships to maintain a person.  Positive relationships influence a positive belief system.  Our peers influence our beliefs, our habits, and our emotional reactions.  We need positive people around us to help us stay accountable.  We need people to remind us to remember our goals and to help us stay focused.   Each time we speak our goals and affirm them to another person, we begin to move to the point where we become responsible for our own lives.
The five people we spend the most time with are those that have the most influence over us.  Ask yourself, “What are those people like?”  “Are they helping me move closer to my goals or taking me further away from them?”  It’s not necessary to get rid of all our friends; however, it does take 20 positives to overcome one negative.  Obviously some influences can’t be totally abandoned. However, we can choose who we spend the most time with, and we can choose how we respond to the person who chooses to be negative.
Choose to get around positive people.  Some church groups and civic organizations are good sources.  We can create our own positive influences by listening to CD’s and reading motivational books as well.  Some may say they don’t have time to read, I say we don’t have time not to read to fill our minds with as much good stuff as possible.  Some negative influences can be counteracted by choosing to focus on something different.  Life is too short to waste on negtive people who drag us down.  Get around great people who have great goals.
When you’re faced with a situation like the one you described you need to simply stop take a deep breath and realize you have a choice.  Then make a decision to make the positive choice. Have your goal so clearly in your mind that you know what it is you want to accomplish. When someone says, “Oh come on just have what you want and enjoy yourself”, you can say something like “I can enjoy myself and make healthy choices at the same time.”  Each time you choose a positive response, it becomes easier to make a great choice the next time as well. It is important to realize that we are influenced by the people who we around the most. Choosing to make your circle of influence people who will help support you and hold you accountable to your goals.  Choose to seek out people who are positive or create your own sources.  If you need help, feel free to call me at 755-1115.  As a certified life coach I would be glad to help you create a positive circle of influence.  Weather your goal is weight loss, moving ahead in your career, or simply improving your quality of life, I can help.
