ANSWER: Are new cars safer than pre-owned cars? Not necessarily. Mechanically pre-owned cars are just as safe as new cars, as long as they have been given thorough inspections. When I purchase, or trade for pre-owned vehicles, they go through a very thorough multi-point inspection. If anything is found in the inspection, the appropriate repairs are made before the vehicle is placed on the lot for sale. New cars are, however, safer than they used to be with the advances technology has made over the past years. Technology has given manufacturers the ability to incorporate new systems, such as inflatable curtains, airbags, dynamic stability control, etc. which make the cars safer than their predecessors. QUESTION: What features should one look for when purchasing a new car, and do these features really work? ANSWER: Many safety features are standard equipment to most vehicles now, however there are some manufactures that still offer specific safety features as optional equipment. Volvo’s Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) system is standard equipment within the Volvo line. DSTC is a system which monitors traction to the wheels, much like a standard traction control system, but takes it a step further by also monitoring steering. Most manufacturers have versions of DSTC and the majority of them offer the system as an option. Do systems like these work? Absolutely. The technology and engineering behind new vehicles today is really amazing. There are a wide variety of safety features and equipment in vehicles today. My advice to anyone thinking about purchasing a new car, would be to look for value and quality…………of course if you look at a car and love the way it drives and you just fall in love with it, a little impulse never hurts!
