Will we all get along in Heaven?
There are many verses in the Bible that show heaven to be a place of absolute happiness, including 1 Corinthians 2:9. My wife and I have been married for many years. I am happier being with her than with anyone else. Suppose I die first, and she remarries, and all of us (me, her, and her new husband) end up in Heaven. Will I spend an eternity watching her with her new husband? Will he spend an eternity watching me with her? How does all of this work out?
ANSWER: This question has been discussed and discussed for thousands of years. To at least give some clarity to this issue I encourage you to look at the words of Jesus in Matthew 22:23-33. The Sadducees were trying to challenge the authority of Jesus concerning the Resurrection. They denied and scoffed at the idea of a literal Resurrection. They used a law, based on Deut. 25:5-6, that when a husband died without a son, the brother was to marry his wife and bear a son. This would assure the family name would continue and that the property would remain in the family. They went wild with their story and had all seven brothers die, no son born, and finally the wife dies…I wonder why? Their question was, because they were trying to show how impossible a Resurrection would be, who was the husband in eternity? There was logic, but it was cold, egotistical, unbelieving and downright revolting. They were only thinking of the physical world and believed that eternity would be nothing more than a continuation of this world, both in its nature and in its relationships. I love the answer of Jesus…”You are wrong, you don’t know the scriptures and you don’t know the power of God” (22:29) He then stated that the Resurrection exceeded earthly relationships even beyond the bond of marital relationships. Jesus compared that heavenly relationship to heavenly angels and God.That means at least two things. Our heavenly life and relationships will be PERFECT. No selfishness or sin will affect our love and lives. Everyone will love everyone perfectly. God will change all relationships into perfection, just like the relationship between angels and God. Secondly, our heavenly life and relationships shall be eternal. Not only will everyone love everyone perfectly, but eternally we will enjoy the presence of each other, even as the relationship between angels and God is enjoyed eternally. I don’t begin to say I understand all of this. I can’t imagine any relationship being more joyful or complete than the one I have with my wife. But this I know, someday as Christians we will gather for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19:6-8) and a whole new way of living will begin. A way that is perfect and eternal.
