Signs of Alzheimer’s
Do I have Alzheimer’s disease?
Having occasional memory lapses does not mean that you have Alzheimer’s disease. Forgetting where you put your car keys occasionally is normal; not remembering that you have a car is not. Classic signs of Alzheimer’s disease may include an inability to recognize objects or newly formed friends, forgetting to turn off the stove, close windows or lock doors. Not remembering how to use simple tools such as a pen or pencil. Unusual behavior caused by poor judgment or memory and agitation may also be indicative of Alzheimer’s disease. When these behaviors become progressively worse and cause worry or threaten the safety and security of self or others, it may indicate the need for professional assessment. Consulting your physician is the best first step. The physician’s assessment will likely include a history focused on family and personal behaviors, a complete physical examination, and functional and mental status examination. Adult Care Facilities that specialize in dementia care use the Mini Mental Status Screening examination. The Physical Self Maintenance Scale and Geriatric Depression assessments are reported to the physician along with recommendations for care options. By cooperatively working together with the physician and the family the care staff can provide the appropriate plan of care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease.
