There are benefits for living alone
: What are the benefits of getting help quickly after a fall?
A true subscriber’s story... Elaine S. is an 85 year old female who suffers from congestive heart failure, lymphoma in remission, and diabetes. She lives alone… with no friends nearby, no neighbors, and no way of getting around. She has a wonderful, caring son and daughter-in-law who live 15 miles away but she wishes to remain as independent as possible and relieve them of the burden of care giving. Recently, she suddenly found herself shaking, light headed, dizzy, cold and nauseated. She slowly made it to the bathroom but then fainted and fell, hitting her head on the cabinet door under the sink. When she regained consciousness, she pressed her Lifeline personal help button she wears as a pendant around her neck. “I immediately felt calmer and my panic was gone. In a few minutes, paramedics were in the apartment and soon after I was taken to the hospital. So, you see how the Lifeline alarm I originally didn’t want saved my life! I might have passed out again and it would be many hours later when my son would realize I didn’t answer the phone and something was wrong. I strongly recommend this service to everyone. If you think you do not need the Lifeline personal help button, you are wrong!” Question: What are the benefits of getting help quickly after a fall? Answer: Nearly one third of persons over the age of 65 fall each year, and that figure increases to 50% by age 80. For seniors, falls in and around the home are the most frequently occurring accident. In fact, falls are the seventh leading cause of death in persons over 65. A study reported in The New England Journal of Medicine found that preventing falls and the resulting injuries can reduce or delay the need to move to a long-term care facility. After a disabling fall the longer you wait for help the greater the risk of serious complications and even death. Studies confirm that getting help quic kly after a fall reduces the risks of: Hospitalization by 26% and Death by over 80%
