Countertop options
We’re thinking about remodeling our kitchen countertops, but with all the different options out there, how do we choose the right one for us?
Answer: The first thing you want to ask yourself is why you are remodeling or updating your kitchen. What kind of look you want and how you’ll use your countertop will help you decide which surface will best fit your needs. A few common surfaces that you’ll see are Engineered Stones, Slab Granite, Ceramic Tile, Laminate, Solid surfacing, Concrete, and Stainless Steel. The top performing materials on the market are Engineered Stones and Granite. Here are the main differences between the two: Engineered Stones: The term engineered stone means that natural stone products are combined with a formulated polymer that seals the product and is resistant to burning, staining, and scratching. This product has a more consistent uniform look as well. Most engineered stones come with a 10 yr warranty and some companies offer up to 20 yrs and even Lifetime limited warranties. If you cook a lot, want a beautiful stone look, and want a maintenance-free countertop, an engineered stone product would be an elegant and practical choice for you. Granite: Slab granite is a beautiful natural stone product that is very tough and durable as well. Colors and grains can vary in each slab. There are different grades of slab granite as well, so make sure you are informed on the quality of the color you choose. Granite is heat and scratch resistant also, but requires periodic sealing since natural stone is porous. There are many edge options to choose from which differ in price. Granite would be an elegant and durable choice for you as well. Getting estimates: Make sure when getting estimates that you are well informed about each and every product and the advantages and disadvantages to each. Before you waste your time and the Salesperson’s time, get educated on the features and benefits and make sure you are getting a quote on a product that fits your wants and needs. Also, make sure you are comparing apples to apples on quotes. For Example: A company may be advertising a certain square foot price; however, in most cases there are numerous charges added to the cost. Get an installed price for the whole project, which may include tear-out, certain edge options, sink installations, warranty if offered, and possible haul-off of old material. Also don’t forget to take into consideration any plumbing, or electrical work that may be needed as well. Hopefully these tips will help you to be successful in choosing the right countertop and company for you.
