Remember...
Do you remember some of Wichita’s eating establishments?
Answer: Do I! I have always been a fan of great sandwiches and various eating places. You see fast food has been around for years, only we did not call it that back in the old days. Do you remember these great ‘fast food’ places? The first Nu Way sandwich I ever had I thought was fantastic. A lady at Treweeks Drug Store that was located at Franklin and Nims sent my buddy Bill Nulik and I on our bicycles to get Nu Ways for the staff and for us. They were and are very good. Ralph Baums’ Burgers...in my opinion...they had the best chili burger in town. Takhoma Burgers were located all over Wichita. Eventually they went to a legendary location on Maple just west of Lawrence Dumont Stadium. A good friend of mine, Arky, owned and operated Takhoma Burgers. Later his grandson, now located on West Street, ran it with the slogan, ‘We didn’t invent the hamburger...we perfected it’. Best Burgers at 13th and Hydraulic were good. So was and is Walt’s on West Street and all of their locations all over town. Ted Christian’s Coney Island located at the corner of Emporia and William featured the best tasting meal overall...again, in my opinion. As my old friend Glen Ledbetter says, “It’s the best meal you ever wrapped your lips around.” Of course who could ever forget George Stevens’ Lazy R Restaurants? I can still taste those charcoal burgers in my mind. And on North Broadway was Kenny’s Drive In and their famous foot long hot dogs. Jack’s North High Burgers kept many high schoolers and North High alumni happy for many years. So many good, good sandwiches. I know many of you will be writing and telling me about many more. Wichita has always had super food. I have talked about our fine sit down restaurants in past articles, but I have always been a big fan of fast food, whether they called it that back in those days or not. I guess that’s the old newsman in me...never taking enough time to sit down and enjoy a meal...always running to the next story. As I close, I am left with another fond memory...that of the State Fair and the cooler weather coming. Get yourself a good bowl of chili and a hamburger and it will set you free.
