$29 gets you $3,600? Can’t be!
Question: I’ve seen several advertisements on Diner’s Magazine in your publication and The Wichita Eagle. The offer seems too good to be true. How does it work?
Answer: Sometimes the biggest problem a business has in coming up with a new idea is getting people to believe that the offer is really true. Such is the case with Diner’s Magazine. You would not believe how many calls and emails we get from people just like you saying things like, “I can’t believe it,” or asking, “How does it work?”, or “How do you do it?” Here’s the scoop: Diner’s Magazine is now a semi-annual publication that showcases several of Wichita’s premier dining establishments, in a controlled-editorial style. These restaurants seldom coupon...and if they do...they certainly do not issue coupons valued at $10. Interviews with owners, managers and chefs, are blended with articles, recipes and photos for a most interesting read. Previous to this new and upcoming issue (January - June 2008), Diner’s Magazine was a quarterly publication, offering more than $400 worth of coupons in each issue. The annual subscription cost was $29 for the four quarterly issues, which would provide more than $1,600 in coupons. This is the hardest part to understand for most consumers. How can you go out and buy anything and have it worth...in real dollars...more than 50 to 1...immediately...over what you paid for it? Imagine going to the hardware store and buying a garden hose for $30 and coming out and it being worth $1,600. No wonder they think there’s a trick somewhere. But there isn’t. Now, the new subscription offer is for the current issue (Fall 2007, with the more than $400 in coupons), and the next 4 semi-annual issues (all the way through December of 2009...each with more than $800 in coupons), for the same $29. That’s more than $3,600 in coupons, for a better than 120 to 1 return! I guess if there was a credibility problem before, there’s really one now. This credibility problem, however, will be short-lived, as this subscription offer ends December 10, 2007. Each coupon in the magazine is a legitimate $10 savings and complies with one of the following formats: 1. ‘Buy 1 - Get 1 Free’...where the customer buys a $10 or more entrée and gets an entrée of equal or lesser value free; or 2. $10 Off a Specific Item’...where the customer buys an entrée and gets $10 off the price; or 3. $10 Off a Ticket of $30 Or More’...where the customer gets $10 off the food portion only of a ticket totaling $30 or more, where the total includes two (2) entrées or more, and the total does not include taxes or gratuity; or 4. $10 Or More Item Free With Purchase’...where the customer gets a $10 or more item free with the purchase of two entrées. Only 30,000 copies of each issue are printed. When they’re gone...they’re gone. With 30,000 copies, it might also be interesting to note that each issue Diner’s Magazine offers more than $24,000,000 worth of discounts off dining over the next 6 months!
