Destruction of the world or the temple?
Question: Luke 21: 5-19 talks about the destruction of the temple and the persecution that will take place. How do we know that our Lord wasn’t talking about what happened in 70 A. D. instead of the end of the world? (all answer the same question).
Answer: I understand that Jesus, in Luke 21:5-19, is speaking about the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 70 A.D. He continues this in verses 20-24. In verses 25-28, however, Jesus goes on to speak of his second coming; this is where he talks about what you refer to as “the end of the world.” The destruction of Jerusalem is a separate event from his second coming; there will be time in between the two events. Further, the second coming and what happens then will be a far greater event than Jerusalem’s demise. However, the two events share that both have elements of judgment and deliverance, and in both events, believers are called to be strong and faithful. May the Lord give our leaders and this nation the wisdom to follow God’s leading in world affairs and especially in the middle east.
