A good balance between home and work
Question: I feel pulled in a thousand directions. I feel guilty when I’m working because I should be home, and I feel guilty at home because I should be working. How can I resolve this inner conflict?
Answer: Sometimes you don’t feel balance because what you want to be doing is different than what you are doing. What you want to be doing is generally tied to your values. When you’re not living in your values, emotional upheaval follows. For example, my family is extremely important to me. Last year my business was very, very busy and we were short handed. I was spending 16 hours a day at work. Needless to say, after two months I was not only exhausted, but miserable as well. I wanted to be with my family and I wanted to work, but they weren’t balanced. Once I began to change my work habits, learning how to get more done in a shorter amount of time so that I could spend more time with my family, my outlook improved dramatically. There are some steps you can take to get more done in a shorter time . First, look at your list of things to do and determine how long (honestly) it will take to do these tasks. Many times we plan 36 hours of work into one 10-hour day. You set yourself up for stress and certain failure by over stretching on a consistent basis. Second, find a great priority setting system. You need to know what’s truly important so you can focus your energy in that direction. Develop a system that allows you to focus on your highest priority task until it is accomplished. Perhaps you need to let the phone go to voicemail or turn off the chime on your computer that tells you a new email awaits, then set a time for returning calls, or answering emails. Third, stay on task. Brain Tracy says to ask yourself, “Is this the best use of my time?” This question helps you stay focused on your priorities. For example, chatting at the water cooler about the ball game may be nice, but will it help you get your priority tasks done so you can spend time on other important areas. Fourth, be “healthy selfish.” Donna Kretch says, “Take time to recharge your battery. Doing the things you love is crucial to your health! Remember, balance looks different for different people. To one person it means being off work at night to attend to family needs. To another it means being able to randomly leave for 4-7 days whenever you want. To yet another, it means working hours besides the normal 9-5, so you can do what needs to be done personally throughout the day.” Remember - Quality at work and quantity at home. This means that professionally, 90% of your time should be spent on activities that make money. Delegate the other things out. Plan, set priorities, and stay focused. Personally, recharge your life by relishing the moments that matter; be there for the special events. You’ll find your guilt feeling melting away as you balance your life.
