Skilled nursing facilities
Question: What is a Skilled Nursing Facility?
Answer: A Skilled Nursing Facility has Registered Nurses and Therapists who provide 24-hour care to people who can no longer care for themselves due to physical, emotional, or mental conditions. A licensed physician supervises the care of each individual and a nurse is always on the premises.
Skilled medical care includes services of trained professionals that are needed for a limited period of time following an injury or illness. Examples of this type of care include wound care, IV antibiotics, Physical Therapy to correct strength and balance problems, Speech Therapy following a decline due to a stroke, and Occupational Therapy to help a person regain independence in the areas of dressing, grooming and eating. When an individual enters into a Skilled Nursing Facility following an injury or illness, the goal is for nursing and therapy to work together to help this individual reach their prior level of functioning so they may return to their previous living arrangement prior to going to the hospital. The most common type of injuries or illnesses we see in a Skilled Nursing Facility are a broken hip, knee replacement, stroke and heart and vascular problems.
To qualify for Medicare to cover this type of service you must have been hospitalized for three days, and you must enter the facility within thirty days of this hospitalization. Medicare will cover the first twenty days at 100%, then there is a daily deductible which may be covered if the patient has a co-insurance. There is a 100 day maximum that Medicare will cover, although this is not guaranteed. To continue to receive “Skilled” services covered by Medicare, the patient has to continue to make progress towards their prior level of functioning. If the patient reaches this level or ceases to make progress then Medicare will not be able to continue picking up the bill.
