What have you accomplished?
Question: What should we reflect on this past year?
Answer: This is the time of year when you can look back at the past year and reflect on what you’ve accomplished. Reflections typically revolve around how much money you’ve made, what possessions you’ve accumulated, or what goals you’ve accomplished. While looking at those items is fine, it’s more important to look at how you’ve affected others. When all is said and done, the only thing that will live on is what kind of legacy you’ve left. Relationships are the foundation of legacies. Reflecting upon last year’s behavior and making changes for the New Year, enables you to grow personally and establish relationships. In the end, the only thing you have is relationships. Money becomes less important. The cars you drive, or how big your home is pales in comparison to whom is standing by your side when times get tough. Spend time reflecting on how you spent your time last year. How much time did you spend with your family? How many times did you stop to listen to someone who needed an ear? How many encouraging words did you offer? You affect many people through-out life, your friends, your family, and your coworkers. You influence others outside your immediate circle as well; the smile you give to the check –out clerk, the coat you donate to the guy on the street, or the meal you serve at the shelter. While some relationships are on-going, short simple interactions with people can influence them positively and leave a permanent impression as well. Looking ahead what can you do differently this year? Make a plan and keep your eyes open for every opportunity. When you’re open to possibilities, you will make a difference to someone else and you will improve personally. Focusing on others, leaves little time for sinking in self pity, lamenting the economy, and feeling unfulfilled. Focusing on others refreshes the soul, puts economics in perspective and fulfills our deepest needs. When you help others get what they need; you get what you need. What kind of mark are you making on your world? Learn from the past and plan for the future. One thing is certain, everyone makes a mark; will yours be a stain or a beautiful portrait. Leave a legacy that lives on positively in everyone you touch.
