Question: With all of the talk about the state of our economy, is this a good time to go back to school?
Answer: Our daily lives are filled with news about recent layoffs, the realities of living in a recession and the mortgage crisis. It seems that the news is getting worse with each passing day. There is, however, something you can do to help ensure you and your family’s future: Go back to school and earn your degree.
Now, you may think, “How could I possibly do that in addition to my full-time job and family responsibilities?” The answer is to enroll in an educational institution that specializes in adult education. An adult education program caters to working adults and provides you with the opportunity to earn your degree without dramatically altering your lifestyle.
Classes meet one night per week. Instead of making a 16-week commitment and attending class three times per week, an adult degree program allows you to attend class one night per week from 6pm to 10pm. These accelerated courses enable adult students to earn three credit hours every five to seven weeks depending on the subject matter.
Practicing Professionals. Adult educational instructors are working professionals who have acquired years of first-hand knowledge and experience. You will learn from instructors who not only have excellent academic credentials, but also work in a variety of managerial and executive level positions with many different companies and industries.
The Adult Learner. In order to capture an adult’s interests, the course must be relevant and applicable. The best adult degree programs build on the students’ experiences by linking new concepts to ones students are currently using in their lives. Building on life experiences allows the students to self-reflect and critically examine the world in which they live and work.
Financial Aid. Most universities, colleges, and community colleges offer some type of financial aid program. In addition, check with your employer about tuition benefits. Many employers provide educational benefits that may pay for part or all of your tuition.
Getting Started. I have the opportunity to work with many new students during their first course in the program and I repeatedly hear the most difficult step was making that first call. Once the call has been made it is pretty much smooth sailing afterward. Don’t wait any longer. Make the call today! You will be glad you did! Many adult education programs start year round so you don’t have to wait until the next semester to get started.
