Are we supposed to look like God?
Question: We are said to have been made in the image and likeness of God. Does this mean that, if we were to see God, he would resemble a human being? Or, does it mean our immortal soul is in his image and likeness?
Answer: So far as I know, the Bible never offers an explanation, but I think it is clear that God does not physically resemble a human. Heaven is not likely to resemble earth; I do not think that it has time and three-dimensional space. But God is a mental being Who has knowledge, emotions, love and hate for things, persons and ideas. Physical descriptions of God in the Bible, such as Isaiah 6, Revelation 1 and 4 are so elaborate and difficult to imagine that I cannot find help from them. I cannot say what God is like “physically.” This is why we needed God to live among us in the body of a human, Jesus. See John 14 where Jesus talks to His disciples the night before His Crucifixion. Philip says, “Lord, show us the Father.” And Jesus answers, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” In the Psalms, David talks to God continuously. What is clear, and different from all other religions, is that God loves humans! He can have emotions. He is also referred to as hating or desiring things. Apparently life on earth is for the purpose of developing a race of eternal-living beings, who can communicate with God, and who can become higher than the Angels by living in the peculiar circumstances of earth. Is this a question we will have in Heaven, or will it be so obvious there that we will not need to ask it ?
