Moving forward into the New Year
Question: How can we move forward to the future?
Answer: 2009 is drawing to a close. Now is the perfect time to reflect on the year. Maybe your year has been filled with fruit or perhaps it’s been littered with pain, either way it is time to reflect and move forward. Looking at your past year enables you to learn, plan, and move forward successfully into 2010.
First, is there anything you can learn from the past year? Reflect on any setbacks or conflicts. Is there something you could have done differently? The trick here is to understand that setbacks occur for everyone occasionally. Instead of beating yourself up, discover what you could do differently next time. Getting caught up in “would have, should have, could have” is counterproductive. Ask a trusted friend for their insight. Use those insights when planning the coming year. Understand that whatever happened this year is unchangeable; you can only change your future.
Second, decide what you want the upcoming year to look like. Write down your vision with clarity and detail. What will your relationships, your finances, your spiritual life, and your health look like next year? State your vision in positive, present tense terms. For example, “I am so grateful for the quality time I make to spend with my family.” “I live in such a way that my health allows me to accomplish everything I work at”. Zig Zigler calls statements like these, “Telling the truth, in advance.” When you write your vision down, and keep it where you can read it DAILY, your brain goes to work on it and your actions move you in the direction of your goals.
Third, move forward. Remaining mired in negative thoughts and regrets or moving forward focusing on success is a choice you must make. Moving forward may not be the easiest path. It may require changing old habits, letting go of past pain, or developing a new mindset. You were born with every capability for forward movement. There are stories upon stories of men and women who have overcome adversity and accomplished great things because they made the choice to move forward. Create the step by step directions that enable your vision to become reality.
Make 2010 the best it can be. Learning from the past, using it to create vision and a plan, and then courageously moving forward in the direction of your dreams creates the setting for your success.
