Wearing a bra shouldn’t be painful
Question: Is there any way to get rid of the pinching that comes with bras?
Answer: The pinching, binding, the backaches and shoulder discomfort...many women live with the annoyance of an ill-fitting bra. But there is no reason to tolerate discomfort. The properly-fitted bra will eliminate pain and offer optimum comfort, support and great looks. An ill-fitting bra may cause a woman to over-tighten the straps, which cuts into the shoulders. An ill-fit may also cause the bra to ride up in the back and allow the breasts to drop down in front, which causes discomfort. All a woman really needs is a bra that is properly fitted. A custom-fit bra assures comfortable support and relieves pressure off of sore shoulders. By encompassing and supporting the entire breast, it eliminates shoulder pain and tightness. Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to find in an off-the-shelf bra that fits right. That’s why it’s imperative to be professionally fitted. It takes at least three measurements and sometimes up to six to ensure an accurate fit. A quality orthopedic bra provides support from beneath the breasts, fitting snuggly against the solar plexus, rather than being supported by the shoulder straps. The bra stays low in the back; it does not rise up. The bra should be made of soft fabric and should hold the breasts forward and high enough so the apex of the breast is midway between the shoulder and the elbow. Providing adequate suspension eliminates pain in the back, shoulders and diaphragm area. It also eliminates slumping, which improves posture, contributing to a better fit. According to an article written by C.M. Cook, professor of physiology and anatomy at East Los Angeles College, an ill-fitting bra displaces breast tissue, pushing it over the chest wall or allowing it to become drooping and pendulous. The properly-fitted orthopedic bra will encompass all of the breast tissue with no pressure to flatten the tissue or restrict circulation, and the support will be firm enough to eliminate virtually all of the motion of the breasts during walking. You need suspension – a true balance of weight – which carries the weight of both breasts around the circumference of the body, eliminating pressure on the shoulders and tightness or binding around the body. Providing adequate suspension reduces pain in the back, shoulders and diaphragm area. The proper fit is especially important for the bra that holds the breast prosthesis in place. People have the prosthesis fitted, but not the bra. Then they are unhappy with the prosthesis and 99 percent of the time, the bra is the culprit. Better health In addition to increasing comfort and improving appearance, the proper fit is important to overall breast care, something most women neglect to consider on a daily basis. An ill-fitting bra does not provide adequate support, which prevents proper circulation within the breast tissue. In severe cases, poor-fitting bras can cause breast tissue to separate into glandular masses. The right bra – if properly fitted – offers the long-term benefits of protecting the tissue so that breasts do not become pendulous. And, if that’s not reason enough, wearing a properly-fitted bra will make your clothes fit better and make you look thinner and more shapely!
