Setting goals, making plans, a new year
Question: I always make New Year’s Resolutions. Each year I say, “This year is the year I’m going to accomplish something”. Each year by this time I can’t even remember what my resolution was. What can I do to stay on track all year long and accomplish what I set out to do?
Answer: In order to move closer to your dreams, you must have a plan for getting there. You can take steps each day toward your ultimate dream. In order to make those moves, you must have clear steps laid out. That’s what goals are; the stepping stones on the path to your dreams. You must learn to set goals in order to move in the correct direction. This month and next, we will be looking at how to create the plan and set the goals to propel you to the life you want. The first stone to set on the path is a written plan. Start with taking a good look at where you are now. Then decide what you want your life to be like 5 years from now. Ask yourself; “If I could create the kind of life I want and become the person I want to be, in five years my life would look like this: What are my marital/family relationships like, what does my work/ career look like, what is my income, how is my health, what weight am I at, what things have I accomplished, what new skills have I acquired, what major purchases have I made, what things do I spend my time on, what hobbies do I have, where is my life spiritually?. The second stone is to write out those dreams into a definite plan. Write down where you want to be in 5 years. Next look at where you will need to be in 3 years to make the 5 year plan a reality. Follow down the page with 1 year, 6 months, 2 months, 1 month, 2 weeks, 1 week. Write your plans for each area of your life that you thought about earlier. As you begin to write these down, you will see that you can actually take steps every day to get you closer to your dreams. The path from 1 week to 5 years will become obvious to you. Writing down your plans will take time. Anything worth doing always does require time. It is, undoubtedly, time well spent. Working on your plans takes effort. Anything worth having always does require effort. Sometimes you will feel like, your dreams will never happen or that 5 years or 10 years is a long way off. You have to do something in that time frame; you may as well spend it on working toward the life you want to lead. Next month we’ll discuss how to set those plans into stone. Till then dream on.
