Best time to paint your home
Is now a good time to paint?
Answer: Interior painting is pretty much a go year round. However, if you are wanting to paint a basement that has a lot of dampness, then you may need to run a humidifier to thoroughly dry the walls and ceilings. Remember this, preparation is as important as painting, getting the room prepped to paint can take a lot of time, moving furniture, patching holes in walls, covering bad spots that may be the result of leaks. There are a lot of products to assist you in preparation, a sealer or primer for new surfaces is a must. Semi-gloss paint for walls and flat paint on ceilings. It is my experience that semi-gloss paint will wash or clean better than most flat paints, and paint "drips" and messy accidents happen oh so often. Exterior painting? That is a whole different story. Exterior painting really should be left up to the professionals for the most part. The best, ideal time is in the fall when the 100 plus degree weather has surpassed. Trim and facia work are important before painting. It is very important to check the wood to see that no rotting has started. If so, replace those boards and prime them thoroughly. Priming the boards before they are installed is a great way to assure that all sides are treated and will last longer than just treating/priming one side of the board. Scraping on surfaces that have not been painted in a long time can be daunting. Clean all areas with a pressure hose to get rid of dirt, grime and other obstacles like insects that have taken up space in and around your guttering. In summary, painting the interior of your home can be done most anytime, but be more cautious on exterior work and leave that for the fall. Spot painting can also be done most anytime year round during good weather. More next month...
