Better health for pet owners
Question: Is owning a pet actually good for my health?
Answer: Did you know chances are, you’ll live longer and feel better if you own a pet. Scientific studies about the human-animal bond reveal that pet owners are more likely to have reduced stress levels, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and better mental health. They also experience fewer heart attacks than people without pets. Pets require our attention and providing the everyday pet care encourages owners to interact and get outside to exercise. Seniors with pets are less likely to be lonely or bored and interaction with their pet often prolongs their lives. Companion animals also provide psychological benefits. Pets are sympathetic, supportive and non-judgmental listeners. Pets provide us with a distraction from our worries; they encourage social interaction; provide a soothing presence and unconditional love. Children also benefit from animal companionship. They are more likely to have higher self-esteem and confidence if they have childhood pets. Animals are known to stimulate communication skills in children and are an excellent way to teach a child about responsibility. Service animals are becoming a very necessary part of the lives of those with disabilities. They are able to help mobility, sight, and hearing impaired as well as alerting an epileptic owner that a seizure is imminent. Veterinarians recognize the existence of the human-animal bond and its importance to client and community health. Our role is to maximize the potentials of this relationship between people and animals. So enjoy your pets! Thank them for keeping you healthy and if you don’t have one - go to your local animal shelter and adopt one. Giving a pet (dog, cat, bird, horse or farm animal) a forever home will do you a world of good!
