Staying on goal during the holidays
Question: With the holidays coming up, I am concerned about maintaining my healthy eating habits. What can I do?
Answer: Thanksgiving: turkey and mashed potatoes, relatives in the house and counting your blessings. While these are important aspects of the holiday, the two words that make up Thanksgiving can take on a different light enabling you to make a difference. Fostering a grateful heart develops a giving heart. When you give you epitomize Thanksgiving.
Developing an attitude of gratitude can be part of your life all year long. It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity of the world. Yes, there is much tragedy in the world and ignoring it isn’t possible or prudent. However, your choice is focusing on it, getting caught up in it, and drowning in it, or redirecting your focus on something purposeful and positive. Concentrate on the blessings you are thankful for. Can you get out of bed every morning, spread love to the people around you or go for a walk without fear? Do you have food on your plate, clothes on your back and a warm shelter at night? Simple things yet it’s easy to take them for granted. Develop your attitude of gratitude by listing 4 or 5 things every morning that you are grateful for. Practice this habit over time and gratefulness will become your new habit.
Once your attitude is in check, begin pouring out blessings on the people around you. Successful people know that giving back out of the fruits of their hard labor is not only worthwhile, but also perpetuates success. Whether you believe in karma, “What goes around, comes around”, or you hold Christian beliefs, “Do to others as you want them to do to you”, or “You reap what you sew,” you know that giving lightens your heart and blesses the people around you. You can give of your money (pass on eating out once and give that) or your time (volunteer to help at an event or collect donations), either way you’ll be surprised at how abundantly you’ll be blessed. Gratitude begets giving.
Thanksgiving: volunteering at a shelter, inviting someone into your home, or donating your Starbucks money to the children’s home. These are the important aspects of the holiday. Practice thankfulness then give from your heart. Your holiday will take on a whole new meaning.
