Hybrids are hot - What...exactly is a hybrid?
Question: I am in the market for a car, and like most everyone, want to make the most environmentally friendly choice that I can, so Hybrids are high on my list. However, I am finding that there are several kinds of them and may or may not be as fuel efficient as their counterparts. What exactly qualifies as a hybrid? Can you give me a simple, quick breakdown to cut through the mire for me?
Answer: Basically, a hybrid electric vehicle combines an internal combustion engine and an electric motor powered by batteries, merging the best features of today’s combustion engine cars and electric vehicles. The combination cuts down on fuel use by improving performance. Additionally, the limitation in distance of electric vehicles is overcome by the support of the gasoline-fueled combustion engine. This hybridization generally provides the ability to drive 500 miles or more using less fuel and never having to plug in for recharging.
There are four types of Hybrids: Mild, Full, Plug-in and Muscle.
•Both Mild and Muscle Hybrids shut off engines at stop lights, uses regenerative breaking and operates above 60 volts, and sues an electric motor to assist a conventional engine. Muscle hybrid might additionally be able to drive using only electric and be able to be plugged in.
