Ring care & cleaning
Question: I have several rings that I have not attempted to clean in several years and they are looking pretty dirty. I used to clean them with a toothbrush and toothpaste but was told that could cause damage. What are your suggestions for ring care?
Answer: Cleaning your jewelry should always be done with care and knowledge of the metal and gems and the appropriate solutions with which to clean them. The best thing to do is take them to your local jeweler who can assure that they are cleaned properly and check the settings, which should be done regularly. January is a good month to get your rings and other jewelry cleaned and checked on as a regular part of maintenance. It’s good to get jewelry cleaned, especially rings, about every 3-6 months since they are usually worn 24-7. The prongs, band, and stones should also be checked at this time to make sure there are no torn prongs, chips, cracks or loose stones and make sure the band doesn’t need any repairs. It’s better to do this periodically during the course of a year instead of losing an expensive diamond!
