Converting resolutions into reality
Question: I made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and to live a healthier lifestyle, any suggestions on how to maintain my goals?
Answer: It’s a reasonable assumption that many people made health related resolutions this past month. Converting resolutions into reality requires your focus on long term effects. My friend Donna Kretch says, “We all leave a legacy. We either leave a mark or a stain.” Leaving a lasting legacy you’re proud of requires looking at your life in retrospect, looking forward to the future, and creating a plan that ensures your health allows leaving a positive mark on the lives of the people around you. Looking back at your life; regrets and rejoices, moves you forward in a new light and allows repetition of activities you’re proud of. Looking back at regrets doesn’t mean you get caught up in the guilt of lost opportunities. Let regret shape the way you precede today using past regret as a model for change. You can’t change the past, but handling the future is in your hands. Look at what you’ve done well too; using those activities as a template for the future. Leaving a positive mark on your family, friends, and even your world requires a look forward as well. What do you want the world to say about you when you’re gone? What knowledge do you want to leave them? What do you want them to remember? For example, I want my family to know without a doubt that they are the most important part of my life. I want them to recognize the value of a relationship with the Lord, and I want them to say I had a passion for helping people in my personal and professional life. Know absolutely what legacy you will leave; thinking about your friends, family and anyone else you touch. Plan today’s actions in harmony with your legacy. For example, if I want my family to know without a doubt that they are the most important part of my life, I purposefully spend time every week with them in quality conversation. My action plan is directly related to my legacy. Keeping my body healthy ensures I can put the plan into action. If I feel well, I’m a better mother, wife, and professional. Donna Krech tells the story of the marbles. Essentially, she keeps a bowl full of marbles on her desk. There is one marble for every day approximately she has left on this earth. Each day she picks a marble from the jar and reflects upon her day. Then she throws the marble away representing a day she will never get back. This exercise reminds her to make the moments in life count. She says, “Life is short; don’t miss a minute of it.” Your legacy is about how you utilize the moments in your day. Concentrate on the legacy you’ll leave. Recognize that the past; either regrets or rejoices, are templates for your future actions. Keeping your body healthy enables you to enjoy a quality of life; a life that embraces the moments in life that matter most, thus leaving a lasting positive legacy in the world.
