Tips on new carpet care
Question: My husband and I just purchased new carpet, what can we do to keep our carpet looking new?
Answer: Buying new carpet is a great way to increase the comfort and value of your home. It only makes sense to try to keep your investment looking good for as long as possible. One of the first things you can do is get as good a pad as your budget allows. The denser the pad, the better. The pad is the shock absorber for your carpet. This helps keep your carpet from hitting the hard surface of your floor and breaking down the fibers. It is important to keep dirt away from your carpet. To help achieve this goal you can put mats at outside doorways. This will help absorb dirt, sand and moisture that can be harmful to your carpet. Don’t forget to clean these mats so that they can keep their effectiveness. Another way to keep the floor looking good is to change up you walkways. This is the area where you walk on a regular basis. This can be accomplished by moving your furniture to different locations in the room. This will decrease the “pile-crush” from walking in the same spots regularly. Be careful when you move your furniture, so that you do not wrinkle your carpet, use coasters and slides to accomplish this task. It is also important that direct sunlight is reduced when possible; this can be accomplished with shade, window tinting, blinds and awnings. The most important step is to vacuum your carpet thoroughly and often, particularly in areas that get a lot of traffic. Walking on carpet that is soiled can damage the fibers and cause them not to stand like is preferred. It is important to get as much foreign materials out of the carpet as possible. So using a quality vacuum that will pull soil from deep in the carpet is ideal. Finally, carpets should be professionally cleaned at least once a year. It is important that it is done professionally because an improper job can greatly harm your carpet and may void your warranty. After cleaning, it is important that the floor is completely dry before being walked on. If you follow these tips and use common sense you can add years on enjoyment to your carpet purchase.
