Is there evidence proving God’s existence?
Question: Apart from the Bible, what is the evidence for God’s existence?
Answer: Presbyterians have a “faith seeking understanding.” This means we do not collect evidence and then come to a conclusion that God exists; rather, we are given the gift of faith, and we spend our lives exploring and living that faith. As the writer of Hebrews tells us, “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” We know of God, then, through the gift of revelation. We do say, however, that there is a general revelation to all. One cannot look at creation and not sense that there is a creator. The psalms testify to this, and Paul also writes of it in Romans 2. This general revelation leads us to seek out this creator. The creator was revealed to us more specifically in the person of Jesus Christ. We know of Christ through the Bible; we when read it, the power of the Holy Spirit reveals him to us. Our forebear John Calvin said we know of the existence of God when we survey nature, but the Bible is like a pair of glasses that help us to see this God clearly.
