Carpeting and indoor air quality
Question: We are in the market for new flooring and we want to have a “healthy” floor, but would still like to have the comfort and advantages of carpet. Is this possible?
Answer: Many factors determine the quality of the air that we breathe in our home and businesses. Most new products emit (VOC’s) volatile organic chemicals. These are found in paint, building materials, fabrics, furniture, cleaning products, literally everything. Unless we want to go back to living in caves, we are going to be exposed to some of these products. We also have other conditions and activities that can add to poor air quality. These are things such as pets, tobacco use, poor ventilation and yes, people. Carpet has been used by millions of people for many years. Carpet is made out of the same materials used in clothing, furniture, and fabrics. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute located in Dalton, Georgia, modern carpeting is one of the lowest emitters of VOC’s in the indoor environment. The emissions of the new carpet typically dissipate in 48 to 72 hours. However, if you are still concerned you may ask if your carpet supplier will air your carpet out before installation. Proper ventilation is recommended. If there is still a concern opening doors and windows can help dissipate the emissions even faster. Carpet can actually be beneficial because air-borne particles settle into the carpet where they are trapped until they can be vacuumed or cleaned. Dust mites are also a concern, 80% of dust-mites are found in mattresses and furniture. Flooring is generally vacuumed more often then furniture. The most important element in keeping good air quality is keeping regular maintenance. Quick removal of spots and spills to avoid stains and fungal growth is important. But a regular routine of vacuuming and a once a year professional cleaning of your carpet will not only keep your carpet healthy but will add years of performance to your carpet. Yes, carpet is a healthy choice for flooring. But like most things require proper care and maintenance.
