Parents guide to senior portraits - part 2
Question: My child will be a Senior next year. When should I have their portraits taken? How do we find a photographer? What are some guidelines and suggestions for Senior portraits?
Answer: In last months article, we discussed some guidelines on What, When, Where and How as it relates to your child’s senior portraits. In addition to that article, here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind before venturing out for Senior portraits. Remember, your clothes need to reflect your personality. Complete outfits are very necessary for an awesome session. Don’t forget to bring your clothes hanging rather than folded or worse crammed in the bottom of a bag….. Yes, those wrinkles WILL show. Now, for our number one rule………..relax and have fun! Below are some specific tips for guys and gals. Girls: Don’t wear glitter, it doesn’t photograph like glitter. Again…it is very important to not get sunburned before your shoot. Your hands will be in your portraits, file and paint your nails. Toes too. Apply an extra application of mascara. Bring powder and lipstick for touch-ups. As for clothes…mini-skirts, destroyed jeans, skinny jeans, shorts, prom dresses, layered tops, tees, tanks, playful dresses, swingy skirts, hoodies, sweaters, jackets, sleeves, tanks and hoods. Accessories….hats, sassy high heels, fun flip flops, sports equipment, uniforms, sheet music, long necklaces, sunglasses, scarves, boots, more hats, bracelets, earrings. Variety is vital for a successful Senior session. Be prepared to have a great time, this is your year. Guys: Don’t have a clue what to wear? Here are some ideas. As for your clothes- jeans, shorts, cargos, button downs, destroyed jeans, hoodies, camo, polo’s, vests, jackets, jerseys, beaters, tees and uniforms. Make sure your hair is dry…if it’s wet it will look wet in your photographs. The simpler the better; avoid big stripes, and clothing that is too small. Don’t bring the same Hollister shirt only in different colors, your photos will all look the same. Variety is key for you as well boys but, realize your accessories won’t be as extensive as the ladies. Accessories- hats, watches, ties, flip flops, sunglasses, belts, ball caps, beanies, boots, sports equipment, and skateboards. Bring your favorite outfits, sports memorabilia, your car, hobbies, your favorite torn jeans. When you think you’ve brought too much, add one more outfit! You don’t have to use it, but being prepared is very important. Relax and just be yourself. This will really be fun.
