What should I know about the admissions process?
Question: Can you tell me what I should know about the admissions process? Is the admission process the same or similar for most skilled nursing facilities? What can we do to make the process, and transition simpler?
Answer: When you ask about the admission process, I assume you mean more than the paperwork involved, so let’s talk about it from that aspect. Prior to beginning the admission process, you may want to make a call to the facility or facilities which are under consideration. A brief conversation with the Admissions coordinator or Social Worker will help you know if you or the person for whom you are searching is eligible for residency at that facility. Once that is determined, a quick tour may help rule in, or out, a facility from consideration. All nursing facilities will have basic admission criteria. Assuming those basic requirements are met, the next step for consideration may be the completion of a Resident Review Instrument, or RRI. Once completed the RRI acts as an assessment tool and is forwarded to our Admissions Department for review. Referrals may be initiated by hospital discharge planners, other nursing facilities or family members. Once it is determined that the person is eligible, then further plans are made including organizing Medicaid and insurance coverage and signing admission papers. The Kansas Area Agency on Aging will need to complete a Care Assessment before admission. After all the paperwork is in place, you will likely be given a list of what to bring such as clothing, and decorations for the room, pictures, chair, television, etc. You will also be informed of what personal hygiene supplies are provided and what you will need to bring. From there the actual move in process is very simple and just a matter of organizing personal belongings and getting settled in. The staff at most facilities understands that this transition can be difficult and are very sensitive to the needs of residents.
