When life throws you a curveball
Question: Any advice on how to deal with unforeseen obstacles
Answer: I’m not a baseball fanatic, heck I’m not even a baseball watcher, but I’ve seen enough ball to know what a curveball is. Wikipedia defines it as “the characteristic grip and hand movement that imparts forward spin to the ball causing it to dive in a downward path as it approaches the plate.” In life, it’s a dramatic event that seemingly shows up out of nowhere and throws your world into a downward dive. You can be in the rhythm of your life, going about your day to day activities, and generally getting along fine. Suddenly life turns on a dime. You lose your job, your house gets blown away by a tornado, a relationship goes south, or your child makes a decision that forever changes her life, turning your even keel into a downward spiral. Without a doubt, life will at some point throw you a curveball. With a ready bat and a trick or two, you can knock it out of the park and overcome obstacles.
First, knowing challenge is inevitable allows you to develop your mindset ahead of time. You can look at curveballs as problems that you can do nothing about or you can look at them as challenges and meet them head on. Bombard your brain with positive, solution oriented materials even before a situation arises. You’ll feel more capable of handling challenges when they occur if you’ve pre- trained your mind to see challenge as opportunity. Great athletes prepare their minds for great games.
Second, fear keeps some people in the dugout rather than in the game, so resolve to meet the challenge and allow it to mold you. Challenges are tools that make you a stronger more effective person. There’s no growth opportunity in shying away from challenges. In fact, instead of resolution, un- faced challenges hangs around longer, causing more heartache than if you’d faced them head-on from the beginning. Meeting challenges full on develops your coping skills and your empathy for others. By swinging into action, you positively affect your outcomes even though you may not be able to change the circumstance.
Third, the ballplayer has a coach, a mentor, who helps him refine his skills. When you’re faced with difficulty, seek out someone who has overcome a similar situation. I guarantee someone has already “been there, done that”. Seek out the person who has successfully met the challenge and learn from them. As you grow, you in turn will be able to help the next person. Seek out over- comers and you’ll learn to overcome. Someone removed from the situation can help you see things in a different light and find clarity in the middle of chaos.
Certainly at some point life will throw you a curveball. Be prepared with a previously developed positive mindset. Find a coach or mentor that has already overcome a challenge and can help you find a clear path; then take action by facing the challenge head-on. You’ll hit a homerun and emerge a winner.
