Identifying stress
Q: I have been feeling stressed lately and I am wondering how far reaching it is. I am also wondering how to reduce it when the situations causing it have not yet been resolved?
A: Stress has become a household word in our society, and for good cause. Everyone has stress, some stress is good and some is not so good. Stress can have a positive or negative impact on our lives. Positive stress encourages us to complete deadlines and achieve our goals, while negative stress can prevent successful completion of tasks and projects. Negative stress overwhelms us; motivation declines; and disinterest and indifference set in, sometimes causing resentment and anger. When this happens, the body mind and spirit are affected. Stress reduction is different for everyone and is a personal undertaking. For some a planned program managed by an outside source is effective. Many people, however, do not have the time and resources to devote to a commercial stress reduction product or program. Identifying the source of stress is not always easy, but there are ways to identify stressors and work to manage them. Several “Stress Detector Tests” are available. Reviewing one may be helpful in determining how stress may be impacting your life. Some questions that you may be asked include: • How are your sleeping patterns? • Are they regular? • Do you have bouts of insomnia? • Is this recent or chronic? • Do you constantly worry about events that are happening or that may happen? • Do you anticipate the worst when entering into new situations? • Do you have vague physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches or intestinal distress? • How is your energy level? • Do you feel listless or fatigued? • Are you tense or irritable with others? • Do you have trouble concentrating or are you increasingly forgetful? • Have you lost your “Zest” for life? Though not all inclusive, these sample questions do provide a simple framework for examining your potential for stress. Sometimes simple questions will provide answers that spark further exploration! Stress can impact our health and well being. While stress questionnaires can provide valuable information, any physical complaints should always be reported to your physician.
