Holiday decorating ideas
Q: I have a big dine-in kitchen in addition to the formal dining area. During the holidays, everyone seems to gather in the kitchen, completely missing the holiday atmosphere I try to create in the other rooms. Can you give me any ideas to make my kitchen look more festive?
A: While kitchens seem more utilitarian by nature, they are one of the most fun of all the home spaces to bring some festiveness to the family feast. While a great centerpiece can really set the stage for the holiday spirit, there are many things you can do beyond decorating your kitchen table. Treat your room like a holiday canvas and repurpose kitchen items to add holiday flair. Here are a few ideas that can make any kitchen come to life. 1. Use alphabet cookie cutters tied with fall or winter colored ribbon to spell out a holiday greeting. 2. Make a swag of metal cookie cutter ornaments, clear plastic beads and ribbon that matches your color scheme. 3. Add touches of seasonal whimsy by using creamers as vases and fill with greenery mums, or holly. 4. Use candy and cake stands as decorative pieces by displaying pinecones, oranges and cinnamon sticks and dressing up with ribbon. 5. Use otherwise forgotten spaces to add touches of the season by creating colorful displays such as under butcher blocks and on top of refrigerators. 6. If you have glass in your cupboard doors, affix ribbon to the inside in beautiful patterns. 7. Take vintage pieces, like bread pans or mason jars to create season displays in keeping with a kitchen. 8. Look for items and ideas in home decorating stores to supplement items and ideas you already have. 9. Make the seating area, in this case the kitchen table and chairs more inviting with comfortable touches like chair coverings or small pillows that tie in to your holiday color scheme. 10. If your space is big enough, and conducive to it, add a comfortable accent chair for extra seating while you gather. 11. Add a festive table runner or placemats to your island or bar area for a splash of fall color. 12. Fill a simmer pot with a little water or juice and fall spices, such as pumpkin pie spice & whole cloves. Whether you use a portable simmer pot or your stovetop, it will add an Autumn aroma when you are not actually cooking. The ideas are endless. If you are stuck, try looking in some magazines on decorating or visiting home décor stores to spark your creativity. May you have a wonderful family gathering!
