In season weight training
Q: Should student athletes continue to spend the same kind of time and effort in the weight room/workout during the season as they do offseason? What adjustments would you recommend be made to a workout plan?
A: Yes, students should continue to work out during the season. However, the focus is on maintaining, not gaining. Students have worked to build muscle during the off-season and have come back bigger and stronger, and you do not want them to loose the strength they have built up in the previous months. The in-season training plan should still keep the focus on the major muscle groups, and on core workouts. You still want them to get a good workout, but you do not want them to push their muscles as hard in-season - they should maintain the strength they have built, but should not see much of an increase. The in-season phase of training is designed to improve performance, reduce the risk of injury, and maintain sports-specific strength, speed, and power that have been developed throughout the off and pre-season. This helps the athlete maintain peak performance as building muscle in season can fatigue the muscles as well as causes the need for the athlete to constantly adjust to changes in strength.
