When is the best time to close the pool?
Q: We bought a house with an in-ground pool this year and were wondering, when is the best time to close our pool and do I need to do anything in the winter after it is closed?
A: I recommend closing the pool when the water temperature cools off, but before the leaves begin to become a hassle. This leaves it pretty wide open for the pool owner to decide. If you close it in August and it's still very hot, even treating the water with chemicals cannot guarantee the algae will not start growing under the cover. Cooler water helps retard the algae growth along with some winterizing chemicals and black plastic. I would also recommend opening your pool when the water is cooler. During the winter months keeping excessive water and snow off the cover, will help prevent wear and tear to your coping, cover, and straps. Also, because of freezing temperatures, always check to make sure the pool water is not filling up into the skimmers. A pool professional will take precautions for this but do to the unknown amounts of precipitation over the course of the winter; the homeowner should check the water levels occasionally. Remember, pool-care professionals are just a call away to help or explain winterizing questions with chemicals and covers.
