Solid and engineered wood flooring
Q: What are the significant differences between solid and engineered wood flooring? Would you consider one choice better than the other?
A: Both solid and engineered hardwood flooring provides a beautiful option for your home although differ in many respects including: materials, structural composition and resistance. These differences may make one or the other a better choice for your home. First, composition. Solid wood is milled from one piece of wood, making wood the only material used in its composition. Engineered wood is constructed from three or more layers of HDF, MDF, with a real hardwood veneer bonded together under heat and pressure. The next consideration is durability. Solid wood is noted for adding overall structural strength to the building in which it is installed. Engineered wood is more suitable in high-moisture areas or in areas of frequent temperature fluctuation than solid hardwood due to its multiple-ply manufacturing. Climates stability is another consideration. Solid wood expands and contracts more than engineered wood during climatic changes. Solid wood may also experience cupping or warping under high humidity. Engineered wood does not warp or cup during climatic changes because of the multiple layered construction. Finally, location is an important consideration. Engineered wood is more resistant to higher moisture levels than solid flooring. This makes it a better choice for installation over radiant heat sources, damp basements and at locations in rainy climates.
