Tips for cold & flu season
Q: We have four children in our household ranging from teenagers to infants. What can I do to prevent the flu bug this year?
A: Yes, its that time of year again. The time of year where germs fly around, spreading the cold & flu sickness to all that cross its path. While it is difficult to totally prevent getting the bug, there are several things you can do to help prevent your household from getting (or spreading the germs). If you have children, utilize these simple tips to help you manage the flu season:
• Get extra rest. If you’re sick, extra rest will help you recover. If you’re not, it will help you resist germs.
• Wash your hands frequently. Each hand washing should last for 20 seconds or more.
• Use hand sanitizer after touching things such as the handle of grocery carts, or use sanitizer wipes to wipe them down, especially if you have a child sitting in the front part of the cart.
• Avoid close contact with those who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth as it is difficult to avoid touching objects harboring germs which are then conveyed to you.
• Drink lots of fluids.
• If you have a fever, stay home to prevent spreading the germs.
• Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough.
• Maintain a healthy immune system by eating healthy foods and getting plenty of exercise.
Finally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the single most effective way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each season. There are also flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent the flu. Getting the flu vaccine is especially important to those with compromised immune systems, the elderly and the young. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this option.
