Best foods for a high protein diet
Q: What are the best foods for a high protein diet?
A: Just like it is important to check the fat, sugar, and sodium content in foods, it is important to check the protein content as well. High quality protein in food is important to keep your energized, full between meals and keep your body functioning. Here is a list to help you make good choices: Beans Incredibly, one half cup of beans contains as much protein as a three oz steak! Try incorporating black beans, chick peas, kidney beans, lima beans, and tofu into your meal plans. Diary In addition to being a good source of calcium, dairy products are also rich in protein. Some of the choices include cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, skim or low fat milk, and yogurt. Fish Seafood is a great way to get healthy, high quality protein. Fishes such as salmon contain Omega-3 fatty acids which studies show is great for heart and brain health. Try salmon, tuna, mackerel, and halibut. Poultry Lean white meats such as turkey or chicken, without the skin, are high in protein low fat foods. Try a turkey sandwich or a chicken salad at lunch to get you through the rest of the day without being hungry. Grains Grains can be another valuable source of protein, if you eat the right ones. Try cooked quinoa, rough cut (steel cut) oatmeal, pancakes made from whole wheat or buckwheat, and brown rice. Beef A lean cut of beef is another good source of high quality protein. Beef contains about 25 grams of protein as well as zinc, iron and vitamin B12. Try a lean cut of beef with crisp salad or oven roasted potatoes.
