MMA and weight loss
Q: What’s a good alternative to weight loss other than normal treadmill and weight room workouts?
A: There is no question that MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, is one of the best workouts for weight loss as cutting weight is an important part of the MMA fighter’s routine. There are even specific weight loss/combat fitness programs designed around the fitness regime. It has caught on, and for good reason. As MMA has gained more attention, people are realizing that MMA is one of the most intense workouts out there and involves power, strength, stamina and technique, which all translates to a lean and strong core. One reason for this is that the workout pushes you into the anaerobic zone which facilitates the release of potent fat burning hormones. MMA uses techniques such as plyometrics, which is an effective calorie burner. Plyometrics, which is important for any athlete, uses a series of fast paced moves with smaller hand weights. One example is the squat jump where, from a squatting position you thrust yourself up as high as you can go. After several of these, you quickly realize the intensity of exertion demanded on the body by a “simple” workout. Combat fitness programs also use a lot of kicks and hitting bags, which are also physically demanding. Since the workouts are a mix of cardio and strength training, they are very beneficial in boosting the metabolism as well as developing a strong core. Although not for everyone, combat fitness is highly effective for weight loss.
