Cork flooring
Q: I was wondering what your take on cork flooring is? We are considering it as an option throughout our house but may consider something else for the kitchen. Can you give me your take on the pros and cons overall while also keeping the kitchen in mind?
A: As with anything, there will be pros and cons but with cork flooring both the pros and cons are worth giving careful consideration. Let me start with the advantages. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking, cork flooring provides a wonderfully cushiony surface. Cork contains air in its cells so it presents a soft, comfortable feel for your feet, back and legs. Because of its air filled structure cork flooring is like a shock absorber – similar to the feel of great running shoes. Cork flooring also reduces noise and vibration, which is great if you have children or just like a quiet, serene atmosphere. It is also very attractive and comes in a vast array of colors and textures in both sheets and tiles. Now for the disadvantages. Cork is a natural and organic product and as such, will have many variations within each tile. The natural pattern of knots and swirls result in a busy pattern. One of the biggest advantages, softness, is also a disadvantage. Moving heavy furniture requires special care to avoid scuffs or gashes. The weight of heavy furniture causes divots, at the minimum requires the use of coasters. The flooring is also naturally absorbent, so spills require immediate attention. This is one of the biggest problems facing its use in the kitchen. Pets are another issue. Pet odors linger and if you do not catch it soon enough, you may have a problem and need to remove the offending pieces. Cork flooring is a wonderful and beautiful option but it is not for everyone. Evaluate your long-term needs and make the choice that fits your lifestyle.
