Saving money on auto repair
Q: My wife and I both drive older cars and feel that maintaining what we already own is much more ecologically and fiscally responsible than buying a new one at closer intervals. As the cars age, they do need increased repairs. Can you give me any valuable tips on saving money on car repair?
A: One of the best ways to save on car repair is to invest in regular maintenance. Regular maintenance can save you a bundle in repairs over the long run. I suggest you schedule a tune up at least once a year and give your cars the careful attention that will keep them in good order for the long haul. No matter how long you have had your car, I highly recommend thoroughly reviewing your car’s owner’s manual. You would be amazed at how much you will learn about the proper use of the vehicle and some of that information could prevent unnecessary repairs and extend its life. Next, get a code reader. If you have a code reader, you will know what is causing that check engine light to come on and be able to take care of the problem accordingly. This will help you avoid unnecessary repairs or DYI hunting expeditions where you spend time and money eliminating all of the possibilities. Another way to save on car repair is to find a shop you trust and deal with them exclusively. Shop owners value loyalty and often offer better deals for those that are long-term and repeat customers. Even if the shop you trust most is not the least expensive, you are still likely to save money because of honest, quality work. If you know what is causing a problem, consider doing the footwork of finding and buying the part ahead of time. There are many websites that offer parts at discounts or pick-a-part lots where you can get what you need at a fraction of the cost.
