Double duty for bedroom
Q: I have a step-daughter that visits the home three weeks of the year. Since our home is small, every room sort of does double duty, including her bedroom which doubles as a guestroom. I would like to redecorate her room to make it more inviting and a room that she would be proud to call her own, but still be functional to any visiting adults. Any ideas?
A: Fortunately, there is a growing trend to accommodate those who, for various reasons, are working toward making every room and the furnishings in them multitask to the fullest extent. The result is a proliferation of fabulous new designs, fabrics, pieces, and ideas that will make any space feel inviting.
If you want to make your step-daughter’s space uniquely her own, yet still be one that would comfortably accommodate adult guests, here are a few tips to help you get started.
• Avoid painting the room in a way that is only appealing to a child. Instead, use an attractive background which will showcase the rest of the room.
• Instead of child size furniture, think of pieces that work well for any age yet still express the child’s likes and creativity. For example, instead of a student desk, try a cool modern table which can be used elsewhere or repurpose an antique door and build something new. Think neutral pieces which serve as one layer of a design.
• Use accent pieces to add color and more of the child’s personality. Accessories can go a long way in making a space feel unique and owned yet can be changed as the child’s interests or the needs of the room change.
• When thinking of pictures, choose pieces that highlight the child’s interests, but ones that are not excessively juvenile.
• Store toys in containers that can grow with the child rather than ones that define the age of the occupants.
• Use photos and small collections to personalize the room. If necessary, these things are easily stored so that visiting grandparents or friends do not feel as if they are intruders in the space.
Remember that something as simple as a choice in bedding helps define the space. By choosing simple and functional foundational pieces and highlighting with bedding and accessories, you can make the space special and unique for your stepdaughter and beautiful and relaxing for guests.
